Did the update to Win 8.1 last night, simultaneously I downloaded Roxio installation files.

Over WiFi this takes 2 hours.

8.1 finished first, and wanted to restart. Roxio had 20 minutes to go.

There was absolutely no way I could prevent 8.1 restarting my computer. It didn't wait for ongoing processes to end. Just bang, restart, ditch the downloads in progress!

How on earth can Microsoft force you to restart against your wishes? This is so stupid!

Luckily I managed to salvage the Roxio installation file, but it could easily have been a process that was unsalvageable.

Apparently you can edit the registry with this to stop those annoying restarts: -

either from a command prompt:

reg add "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU" /v NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f

or from elevated powershell:

New-ItemProperty "HKLM:SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\au" -Name "NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers" -PropertyType "DWord" -Value 1

However, I am not entirely sure this would have worked (it might have) for the 8.1 upgrade as Windows might not have seen it as an automatic update? However, it should work for future automatic updates (ones not initiated by the user).

Roxio is not part of the 8 to 8.1 update, not as far as I know anyway. If you were installing Roxio while also updating to 8.1 you were asking for problems, IMHO. If that was not the case then please elaborate on what happened?

I wasn't simultaneously installing Roxio, I was just downloading the installation files to install later. During Win 8.1 installation it clearly says you can carry on doing other things on your computer.

OK, Roxio must be installed and picked that time to update itself. Just bad timing I guess.

Not bad timing, coming from Windows 7 I never knew until now it is impossible to stop Windows 8 from automatically restarting your computer. What's worse is it gives you a five minute warning that it's going to do it, but there it's absolutely nothing you can do to stop it. You just have to sit and watch your processes terminate.

This is a really crappy "feature".

The update should really ask you before restarting but then again If I'm doing a major update like this I close everything and focus on just the update.

It does, but there is no option to prevent it. It was a two hour installation, I wanted to do other things simultaneously, as I had completely wiped my disc.

Anytime I've ever seen that prompt there was a postpone option and you could tack some extra time onto it. I've only ever done the store update once and that was a while ago so I can't recall what I saw then.

They took away your option to postpone it. This is why I am angry.

I was a bit surprised, maybe more than a bit! when the computer said, it is rebooting in a few seconds! I thought I was just download it to install at my leisure, instead, it was doing an install as it downloaded... not much notice... I bet it caught a lot of people off guard!
