    Windows 8/8.1 Re-Install

I am primarily a Mac user. Recently, I upgraded my VM to Parallels 9 and bit the bullet and purchased a Windows 8 Pro upgrade disc. The upgrade from Windows XP Pro went well and everything worked fine for a month. Unfortunately, a couple of days ago, Windows 8 would not boot due to a missing boot config file. I then spent a few hours re-installing Windows XP and upgrading back to Windows 8.

My question is this. If I upgrade via the Windows Store to 8.1, how do I re-install Windows 8.1 if things go wrong again? As my Windows 8 DVD is only an upgrade, I am not keen on the tortuous route that I followed over the weekend. Grateful for any advice.

As an aside, will Windows 8.1 allow me to upgrade from Windows 8 (32 bit) to Windows 8.1 (64 bit)? My IMac I7 is well capable of handling 64 bit programmes.

    Thanks.

Personally, I use Macrium Reflect to create system images on separate HDD from the one with the OS installed. That way, if something happens, I can restore the image and put things back to the way they were before the problems started and there is no need to re-install Windows, or any of my apps.

Have a look at this, Clean Install with Windows 8 Upgrade , it may save you from having to install XP. I say may because I'm not sure how that works when dealing with a VM. No, you can't "upgrade" from 32 bit 8 to 64 bit 8.1. Your product code is good for 32 bit or 64 bit so if you can get 64 bit install media you can install 64 bit 8 or 8.1.

Thanks. I have both the 32 and 64 bit Windows 8 upgrade DVDs. I can load the 64 bit version as an additional virtual machine but I cannot activate it as the MS site cannot find any previous version of Windows on my computer. The 64 bit version of Windows 8 will not load over the 32 bit version of XP. I know that MS designed it this way but their licensing policy is bizarre to say the least.

Did you look at the tutorial I linked to, to see if it may help you activate your 64 bit VM?

Yes, I did look at the tutorial but I thought that I read on another forum that MS had put out a patch to prevent people from doing clean installs from an upgrade disk. If someone could confirm that it still works that I would happily give it a try.

I've never done it myself, so I can't comment on that. The last post in that thread is dated 4 weeks ago. I only took a quick look but I didn't see anything about it not working anymore.

Thanks. I may just sit on my hands until next week when 8.1 is released.

I'm thinking that there isn't much to be gained by switching to 64 bit as far as a VM goes. Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the VM install use virtual hardware? You likely wouldn't see any difference in how it runs. Unless your allocating more than 4 gig of RAM I wouldn't think its worth redoing just to go 64 bit. I'm no expert on VM though and I have very limited knowledge on that subject.

If you want to build your own PC and install Windows 8 or Windows 8 Pro, or want an additional operating system running in either a local virtual machine or separate partition (including a Mac), you can purchase the Windows 8 or Windows 8 Pro System Builder products (OEM versions). If available in your country or region, Windows 8 and Windows 8 Pro System Builder products can be purchased at participating stores, you'll need to ask a sales rep for more info. This version doesn't include customer support.
