I used Windows 8 upgrade assistant before installing Win8 Pro.The message i received on compatibility was only one problem.Your PC Firmware doesn't support secure boot so you won't be able to use it in Windows 8.Secure boot requires firmware that supports UEFI v2.3.1 Errata B and has the Microsoft Windows Certification Authority in the UEFI signature database.Sure anyone who has UEFI like me received this message using this upgrade assistant.Through many hour and days of research on internet and other forums nobody seems to know how i can update my firmware, neither ASUS could advise me or Microsoft. To me i figured it should be a BIOS update, but no new ones are available for my system.Since i had no answers i decided to just to do the install of Windows 8 Pro 64 bit (clean install) works well, faster then Windows 7.So far i like it.Only clue i have at this point was a site i found.Knowing my BIOS is a American Megatrend i found this site, but theydo not support other motherboards AMI | American Megatrends Inc. : Aptio® V ,but this is closest clue i got.BIOS stuff and flashing it can always be risky, rendering the motherboard inoperable, causing major issues, that i do not want to do if it will cause me this.If anyone knows anything on this and can help with it would be very much appreciated i am stumped on this,i would like to take full advantage of my system, for now i can not.I know my BIOS mode is set to legacy and it does say in system info secure boot state Unsupported. In my ASUS UEFI BIOS UTILITY setup all i see is in the boot menu is PCI ROM Priority, settings is either Legacy ROM or EFI Compatible ROM,i see no settings for secure boot. My Model PC is ASUS CM6730-US-2AC motherboard is P8H61-M-PRO Windows 8 Pro 64bit.Brink if you read this i was referred by Quickdraw Bleeping Computer Technical Support .ty

Sounds like your PC is to old to have a UEFI/BIOS firmware update for Secure Boot.

I do believe you can still install in UEFI mode, even without secure boot. There are forum members that have secure boot disabled so they can dual boot with Linux etc. As far as I know they still use UEFI. I'd try it and see what happens. With 8.1 I think you'll get a watermark in the lower left of the screen saying Secure Boot is disabled but Windows will still run. I would not flash with a BIOS from any other source other than ASUS. The odds are very high that you'll brick your motherboard doing that.

I have one motherboard (P8Z68) that is UEFI but not secure boot capable. Another one, a P8Z77, is fully Secure Boot Capable.

Alphanumeric is correct and you should be able to install using UEFI. At one time my older motherboard actually had a Windows 8 UEFI option, but it was later removed by subsequent bios updates.

But the options you need to look for are CSM or Compatibility Support Module that has to be disabled for Secure Boot and Secure boot, which might have options for UEFI or Legacy.

The OpRom options are for other things, such as Video Cards. I had to get a special UEFI bios for my GTX 680 to be able to boot into Windows 8 Secure Boot.

The link below might explain some things. Even if you do not have Secure Boot you still have Trusted Boot or Measured Boot, I am not sure of which terms are more accurate, but the system checks other components for problems. But after the initial boot phase, the second part comes into play with or without the Secure Boot being enabled.

I can confirm that CSM is disabled on my ASUS laptop that has UEFI. It was disabled by default when I got it. Enabling or Disabling it doesn't seem to have any effect, not on my system with Windows already installed in UEFI.

I went and checked the motherboard you list and it appears to have the bios on a "32 Mb Flash ROM". I believe it takes a 64 Mb flash ROM for the System to be able to use the advanced Bios Options. This is the reason EVGA states for not being able to convert earlier Video cards to UEFI capable.

The ASUS site does not always show updates for modifications on some boards, so yours may be different.

O.K. first off what are advantages if i can install in UEFI without secure boot? Yes i know system is UEFI old or new type.No i did not want to flash the BIOS if i did not need to,ASUS is no help,no new BIOS anyway.I do not see anything in BIOS that says secure boot or CMS.Only legacy option i see is in PC ROM Priority which i believe you said is for video card.I can go to advanced options, either EZ mode or Advanced Mode.Is this same you mean for 64mb flash ROM?ASUS is not much help,on phone will not advise you to flash a BIOS or anything else to a system, just tell you where to find it.Plus ASUS will show to support download pages, one for PC one for motherboard which show different BIOS's,drivers and Utilities. So this can be very confusing on which would be right for Windows 8.In boot when press f8 i see option to boot UEFI if that says anything, otherwise if you can lead me where else to look in BIOS.This may be a lost cause all together,if there is no big advantages to having UEFI without the secure boot then see no reason to bother, someone told me to contact Brink form another forum, but i appreciate the help, thank you.

Because of the small Bios chip, I assume you only have a Faux UEFI Bios and will not be able to do the full Windows 8 secure boot, although I do not know for sure that is the case.

There are many places that explain the UEFI bios and what advantages it might give you. I like UEFI because it uses a GPT configured hard drive and I don't have to worry if I need to add an additional partitions. But otherwise, there is not really that much difference. Your reading on the subject should clear that up.

Thanks for the reply.Well i do not know either for sure all i can give is my specs from the PC.ASUS motherboard P8H61-M-Pro PC ASUS Model CM6730,originally listed CM6630_CM6730_CM6830.Intel Core i5-2320 CPU@ 3.0 GHZ 4 Cores 4 Logical processors.Yes i did do alot of research been learning alot, before i ever posted in forums for help,so without option of secure boot as some said here, doing a UEFI install without it the only advantages are the ones you listed then?So basically no speed increase other type advantages using UEFI over MBR?Truthfully this is and has come to a point of frustration, that most likely it is not possible with this system or a firmware update or a BIOS update. All i see in BIOS was in advanced mode tabs are Main, advanced, boot and tool.Main is CPU config.,PCH Config.,Sata Config,USB Config.,System Agent Config.,Onboard device config. and APM.Boot tab was the PCI Priority which we went over choices were Legacy ROM or EFI Compatible ROM.So i see no other mention of CMS or EFI except titled in BIOS screen, except for when i exit BIOS to save or disregard changes one choice at bottom says Launch EFI shell from file system.Someone told me to ask Brink on another forum, but i never talked to him,i am sure all you guys are very knowledgeable if you can ask him to appreciate it.If this UEFI fails to be done i'll stay were i am at.

No need to Launch EFI shell with Windows 7 or 8, will AUTO Launch with Windows 7 or 8 DVD booted in UEFI mode.

Brink, i was using Bleeping computers forums was advised by Quickdraw to ask you for help with UEFI on my system.Installing Windows 8 Pro 64bit on a ASUS CM6730 Intel core i5-2320 Asus motherboard P8H61-M-Pro.I received a compatibility message from Windows upgrade assistant,my firmware is not 2.3.1 errata b compliant,so i can not use secure boot in Win8.My Bios shows UEFI,but see no way to enable it in BIOS.Wonder if you can help.I have a post in Windows 8 forums, installs & upgrades,if you wantto look,TY

Hello JDS,

Looking at your thread here, it appears that your P8H61-M-Pro (Rev 3) doesn't support Secure Boot. That doesn't mean that you are not able to install Windows 8 with UEFI though.

Sorry. :(

Do you have the latest 4702 BIOS version flashed? It may help with the other issue. Be sure that your motherboard is the (Rev 3) version of that model first though.

You don't want to flash your BIOS unless it's specifically for your motherboard model and revision number. If you are not sure, then DON'T do it. One mistake could turn your motherboard into a paperweight.

O.K. yes i know this, you asked about bios 4702 which i tried a ROM bios, which gave me the error "image integrity check failed" ASUS as said told me to use 0704 CAP bios, was for my model asus CM6730.I can not make sense of a BIOS that says UEFI,but is unable to use it.Some UEFI's do,some don't for Win8.

The .cap file is normally the name for an ASUS bios file. It is explained on the site as to how to flash a bios. I have done it many times and it seems fairly safe with the newer bioses that can be recovered. Not sure about yours, but before you try, you might check to see if you understand any bios recovery process in case of a failure.

The way you would update a bios on my system would be to make the file available, say on a flash drive, and boot into the Bios setup and go to the tools section. It should give you the option to use one of the tools, which will reboot and ask for the location of the bios file. This should all be explained in your owner's manual.

The manual for that system does refer to an internet bios update process. I might even download the manual for the motherboard itself to check what procedures you can use for it.

But, as Brink mentions, there are always dangers. If you do have a recovery option if something goes wrong, that might make the decision easier.

ASUS has a community for Motherboards and some other products. You might check that and ask about the update if you are not certain.

.CAP needs a BIOS converted,i can not see where to get one, without it it is not recognized in bios utility.Only way i know to flash a bios is copy to a flash drive and use EZ UTILITY in the bios screen.Manual i have it this is the way they show it.For that ASUS FORUM,has not been much help for me some topics pretty outdated and issues i had with image integrity check failed, they believe in forum asus has issues with newer bios's that not being resolved.Alot get same error i got.Even saw through google searches.

.CAP needs a BIOS converted

I use .cap files for my updates. The first part of the file does have to be renamed on my system for my specific motherboard configuration. So a file like P8Z77-V-Pro-ASUS-2104.CAP becomes Z77VP.CAP but if that is necessary, it should have some procedure for renaming.

I did not notice, do you know what bios version you currently have? If not, msinfo32.exe will show you, or the Bios setup page.

Edit: I did download a Bios Re-namer to use with the Bios FlashBack utility and the attachment is what I got.

Bios

My version BIOS is American Megatrends inc. 4101, 9/4/2012 i tried a bios renamer from ASUS site no success same error,"image integrity check failed" when trying to flash in utitlity in BIOS.Does this matter that my system now is using a ROM Bios now instead?
Alot risk involved in this as most say,if it is not going to give me UEFI install with secure boot in Win8,then chances i ain't gonna flash a bios and as said make it a paper weight.
