Swapping 7 for 8

I'm upgrading from Windows 7 Pro to 8 Pro. Question is: After I do the upgrade can I then take the Windows Pro 7 and install it on a second computer running XP? Seems logical but....

If it's an OEM key to a retail PC...then NO. If the key is a retail key, box purchase...then yes.

Example...a PC bought from a local retail store and say an HP brand.....the OS is considered OEM and is permanently tied to that PC and ca't be transferred. If you bought the OS from from a retail store or computer store, it's considered a retail key and can be installed and uninstalled and reinstalled on a different PC.

NO, You would have NO original software.

But you are permitted to upgrade from XP to Windows 8 pro upgrade. The order in which you upgrade affects the legitimacy of your actions. Crazy.

Therefore it would be OK if the retail Windows 7 is removed from PC1 and installed in place of XP on PC2, and you then do a clean Windows 8 install on PC1 (where you could have installed the ex PC2 XP in the meantime, unless it had been OEM on PC2, making it non-transferable), your original software that you have sacrificed would have been XP. Once you have installed Windows 8, it can be transferred to a PC you own.

The maths is 2 eligible Windows installations, one of them upgraded > resulting in 2 Windows installations.

The way I understand it is the only edition that is able to be installed on another machine is the System Builders edition. Once one installs any other edition it is tied to that machine.

However, one can sell the machine and the license is transferred to the new owner.

If you're happy to wait a few weeks, you can see if there are any discount offers around the launch of Windows 8.1.

The licence for Windows 8.1 will be a full licence which doesn't "use up" the licence of a previous Windows version.

More info in this Microsoft blog post.
Pricing and Packaging for Windows 8.1

The initial pricing looks high, but there is a teaser statement at the end:
More to come on Windows 8.1 including new devices and retail offers as we near October 18th!
Depending on how generous those offers are, it may be worth going down that route.

True, but if the OP hasn't bought the 8.0 Upgrade yet, it may be as cheap just to buy 8.1, depending on what discounts are available, and then they would have more flexibility within the licensing terms.

True - the OP does not state if Windows 8 has been purchased, yet.

No retailer will want to get stuck with Windows 8 licenses though - unless 8.1 turns out to be even less popular ;)

Actually, at the moment, you can buy Windows 8 from newegg.com for $99. Upgrade from 8.0 to 8.1 is free. Pricing for the full version of 8.1 is $119. You do the math. ;)

Retail/upgrade EULA http://www.eightforums.com/general-support/10837-windows-8-eula.html#post129442

Can I transfer the software to another computer or user? You may transfer the software to another computer that belongs to you...
...Anytime you transfer the software to a new computer, you must remove the software from the prior computer...

The retail/upgrade Windows 8 is not tied, only the OEM version as supplied with a new PC is tied.

I stand corrected. Thanks, fafhrd.

Thing is that those of us that want to upgrade without a TechNet or MSDN subscription may not be able to get an ISO to fresh install with. It remains to be known if Ms will release an ISO download or snail mail order to upgrade with. We may have to upgrade via the store.

Personally I'd rather wait a month and spend the extra $20 for a disc to fresh install. I would think most would agree that upgrades are a PITA. Discs are also convenient for repair.

Yes but the pricing blog post on 8.1 says "More to come on Windows 8.1 including new devices and retail offers as we near October 18th!"

Those "retail offers" may move the pricing more in favour of 8.1.

Hi. Welcome to Windows EightForums.

Yes, I believe you can. Just as long as you uninstalled it from the prior machine, which I see you did. To be absolutely sure please read the Windows 7 EULA.

I would be more than glad to link that to you, but I'm performing this on my phone so I have no means to do that at the moment.

Thanks I'll check it out. I haven't deleted anything from the machine just upgraded. I have another one that runs xp and wanted to use the 7 upgrade on the old machine. Guess I ought to just stick the disc in and see what happens.

True, for the most part, but if it turns out that the boxed version of Windows 8.1 isn't cheaper than 8.0, the retailers will gain. Also, is it possible those retailers holding boxed copies will sell cheaper just to get rid of them?

Thank goodness I'm not in the market and don't have to make these heavy decisions.;)

Hi there
just adding a remark here -- I'd install WINDOWS 8.1 (will be available in a few days now for general public) rather than Windows 8 -- Windows 8.1 is a MUCH BETTER release - if you've got W8 it will be a free upgrade, otherwise price around the same as W8.

Cheers
jimbo
