Hi mag3,

How about deleting your add-on post here because we now have two individuals, reporting the same problem, and neither one of you has provided your specs, which is probably the most important information when trying to help one resolve such issues. Please start your own thread with specs provided and I'm sure you'll get the help you need.

OK... New thread started. What "specs" do you need?

The Laptop: Asus Model K55A
OS: Win8 64bit
CPU Corei5
RAM 4GB
Secure Boot Control Disabled
Secure Boot State Disabled
Secure Mode State User
UEFI/BIOS Ver. American Megatrends Ver. 407

Issue 1: Function Keys do not work during POST. No matter what Fn keys I push and when (i.e. to try and enter UEFI/BIOS screen, or alternate boot options or whatever), none seem to work. It always goes right into Win8 and to the W8 login screen.

Issue 2: Need to figure out how to add additional boot devices to UEFI settings, (eg. CD_ROM). Specifically, what EFI string to use for the CD_ROM. I go to "Add New Boot Device" It asks me to "Add Boot Option" (e.g. "CD_ROM" name). It then asks me to "Select Filesystem" from a list that has only 1 option, and looks like it's referring to a PCI type entry and not the CD-ROM. Finally, it asks for the "Path for Boot Option" and I have no idea what to enter for that. Nor does it offer any suggestions.

Try pressing the Delete key to get into BIOS at start up.

Tried, that. Doesn't work... Neither does Esc, F8, F2, or anything. No matter what I try, it always boots into Win8. I can only get to the UEFI screen by going to: Charms-->Settings-->PC-Settings-->General-->Advanced Startup, etc.

This came directly from you users manual as David suggested:

press DEL to enter BIOS setup page when ASUS white logo appears during system Boot-up procedure.

If that doesn't work then you'll probably need to contact their support group and ask why.

Sorry mine didn't help. :(

I had read somewhere that there may be a special "Function Key" driver that must be installed to get them to work, during POST, but I'm not sure. I'll have to check with ASUS on that.

Good luck. :)

On some systems, using Shift+ some F key might help. On my Asus motherboard, using F5 during the splash screen might get you to the recovery options, or F8 just when the screen finishes, but it is hard.

Windows 8 has a fast boot option you could turn off to try. There may be a Rapid Boot option in the bios. But Windows 8 uses an option in the BCD Store of "Bootmenupolicy". I don't know if you would want to change it, but having it set to Standard is supposed to bypass the F8 options. Legacy is an option instead of Standard which should allow access to F8. But Windows 8 is designed to boot faster and does give you options to get back to the bios the way you found.

As far as the CD boot options, I do not know how you would set any boot options in the UEFI bios. Normally the bios reads any available boot options during boot. If a UEFI bootable media is in the drive, it should show as such.

I'll try Shift+Fn key. I have two "delete" keys... One is on the top row with the other Fn keys, and "delete" seems to be the primary key press (there is also a Fn+key option). In the lower right, near the numeric pad. there is a "." key with a "delete" option (I believe Fn+key choice). Not sure if either delete key will invoke what it's supposed to during POST. But, definitely, just pressing the affected Fn Key (or Esc., or "delete") by itself doesn't seem to work.

Sorry... I had already disabled rapid boot in the BIOS. Still not working. I did not know of the Win8 option. I will look into that.

As far as the CD boot options, I do not know how you would set any boot options in the UEFI bios. Normally the bios reads any available boot options during boot. If a UEFI bootable media is in the drive, it should show as such.

There is an entire menu on how to "Add a boot device." It asks for maybe 2-3 items, but the problem is I don't know what values to put in the fields it's requesting. It asks for the folllowing
1) Add A Device Name
2) Select Filesystem
3) Path for Boot Device

I don't see what values to add for these things. The only boot device available at present is the Windows Boot Manager, which only points to the Hard Drive. I can't boot off the CD-ROM or any USB devices.

I wish I had a picture.

But you can set boot order in Bios.

I set mine to usb drive as primary.

The computer sees no usb drive & continues to boot normally.
I did this hoping if I ever needed to boot from a bootable usb it might work better.
I have CD as the third option.

I agree that you can, but I only seem to have one item to set (Windows Boot Mgr-->Hard Drive). I need to add some additional items to have a boot order to set. I just don't know how to set them up (i.e. what values are required in each field).

I checked the Owner's manual for your system and the pages concerning the Bios setup seem to be lacking.

Since I have never (yet) seen a system where you had to actually type in the boot devices, I will ask you to be a little more specific about where this menu is you are referring to. Is it some type of ASUS utility?

The Windows Boot Manger is the boot option for a UEFI install. A Legacy install would show the hard drive itself. Boot devices will show or not show, depending on how the bios is set up. If you have it set for UEFI, those will show, if you have a bootable UEFI device, which means a DVD or flash drive with the UEFI compatible media loaded prior to boot.

As an example, the .iso file made with the original Windows 8 download process would not make a UEFI compatible DVD, so it would only show as Legacy. A Windows 7 Install DVD will show as UEFI and Legacy.

I may be misunderstanding your situation, but hopefully it will become more clear.

Is it possible for you to take a photo of what you see on that screen, and post it?

OK, here are the pictures. Sorry for the flash distortion, I just have a small hand held P & S camera.

Step 1: Enter the main UEFI BOS Setup menu (Aptio Setup Utility Copyright 2012 by American Megatrends).

Step 2: Proceed to the "Boot" tab. You are then presented with this screen

attachment_one_main_boot_menu_001.jpg

As you can see, there is only one boot option to prioritize. If there were more, i could reset the order using the "Boot Option Priority" selection.

Step 3: Scroll down to "Add New Boot Option" (now appears in white). Press Enter. You are now presented with this screen:

attachment_two_add_new_boot_option_menu_001.jpg

Step 4: Press "Enter" on "Add Boot Option" You'll see a pop up for the option "name" as in this screen:

attachment_three_Input_1_add_new_option_name_001.jpg

Step 5: Enter the name of your choice and press enter. Then scroll down to the next input, "Select Filesystem" and press enter. You are greeted with this screen:

attachment_four_Input_2_select_filesystem_001.jpg

The instructions on the upper right (if you could see them) tell you to select a file system "from the list provided." But, as you can see, there is only a list of "one" entry, and it doesn't seem to have anything to do with the optical drive.

Step 6: Assuming you were to pick a filesystem, you'd proceed to the next input entry as in this screen:

attachment_five_Input_3_path_for_boot_option_001.jpg

This is the "Path for the Boot Device" entry. I believe it wants the EFI path, but I have no idea what that is for the optical drive I have installed, and nowhere in the instructions does it tell me what it is or how to specify it.

Step 7: Assuming you were able to find the correct "path" spec, the next step is to "Create" the entry:

attachment_six_create_button_001.jpg

And Voila! You have an additional boot option in the main boot menu. Of course, it you don't know the proper inputs, it won't create it.

Again sorry for the flash distortion. I hope this helps clarify my perdicament.

Thanks all, for your help so far. :)

I appreciate that, but it still doesn't tell me what I need to enter in the required fields for other boot devices, like my CD-ROM (Internal, BTW). It just tells me what the fields are.

I guess I'll have to call AMI tech support as well as ASUS.

OK, that was just a start so keep that for future reference. So, I couldn't answer your question any further until you answered my last question. Now, I have one additional question. When it asks to enter the filesystem, does it give you the capability to "browse" for it or do you just have the option to add something in a text field?

Only enter a text field, no browsing. See the picture below "Step 5" in my picture gallery. That's what I'm presented with. Only one item. Although the instructions say "select a file system from the list provided," there is only that one item in the list.

OK then, that makes sense because it is probably not where you need to be at this point. With that said, there has to be a menu that allows you to add items to the boot menu. See this screenshot of the Boot Optons and tell me if it makes any sense to you at this point:
