Will upgrading fix a Broken OS?

I have another thread here regarding my file explorer and it seems, after running every possible test, that the OS is bad.

My question is, if I was to upgrade to the 8.1 preview, is there a possibility that it can correct the issue with the current OS 8pro?

Can't you just restore your computer to factory settings ?

I am sure that I could, but I am doing everything in my power to not lose all of my installed software. A lot I have had a long time and no longer have keys/serials, etc after my move. So, yes, but i'd like to know if wctually upgrading to the 8.1 would fix any existing OS issues. Or, since it is a "preview" is that just like installing a service pack?

It is of course possible that this will solve your problems. But I wouldn't expect this. This is not a good solution to your problems.

Be aware that the Windows 8.1 preview is only that. It will expire after which you will need to do a clean install of the full release of Windows 8.1 or revert to your current OS. Be sure you have some means of doing that.

So, are there any other ways to repair an OS? The Microsoft Automatic Repair stated that it was unable to repair, but didn't say what the issue was! Everything works except explorer. No icons in the nav pane show up, only for a minute, then they go. Is there a windows repair disk of some sort that I can download?

Also, it isn't possible to intall the preview, then when the official release comes out, simply upgrade with a purchased key?

Seems to me that if you install 8.1 you'll lose all your programs anyway..

Have you tried sfc /scannow & Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth in administrator command prompts ?

Yes I have tried that, I was given instructions on this forum to do so.

So, going up to 8.1, even though it is a preview, would make me lose my programs? Why doesn't that happen if I upgrade from 7 to8?

Someone with the 8.1 upgrade should jump in & offer advice.

Hmmm, that is weird every time that I have upgraded to a differnent OS, as long as moving up or back, I've never lost any installations. thanks for bringing it to my attention though.

I sure would like to know how to do that. I've always lost non-Microsoft app installations. The best outcome is they get moved to .old folder but still have to re-install then copy back over.

I've upgraded from 8 to 8 Pro and to 8 Pro with Media Center and not lost anything? All done though add features. I've also done the store update to 8.1 Pro with Media Center and didn't lose anything. I had issues with 8.1 though and ended up going back to 8.0, that required a clean install and reinstall of all my apps and programs.
