I upgraded a cloned 7 SSD to 8 and so far so good. The only thing that has got me is although the machine is working perfectly but it has me puzzled as the read outs for drive there seems to be no 100MB initial partition for some reason.

Anyone explain please:confused:

Well, if it ain't broke then don't fix it has always been my motto. BTW, if you are referring to the Windows 8 Pro upgrade, you can still do a clean install using that as well. See here and good luck with your surgery:

Hope this helps.

Well it does and it doesn't J as I have already spoken to Brink about doing just that and the upgrade requires an OS to "upgrade" you cannot just install 8 from an upgrade CD.

But like you say if it aint broke LOL!!

Well that is a very confusing response to say the least! And maybe you revealed more information to Brink than was available in this thread too. Specifically how the heck is your rig working when you (implied) never had an OS to begin with? Maybe Brink can explain your situation better but if you started with an SSD containing Windows 7, I see no reason why you couldn't use the upgrade disk to do a clean install... unless your clone was a duplicate (eg pirated) edition of someone else registered Win 7 edition (which you didn't make clear either).

Hello John,

You would indeed need to own a qualifying OS to qualify for a Windows 8 upgrade copy, but you should be able to do a clean install with a Windows 8 upgrade copy like in the tutorial below if you like.

Hang on mate don't let us get into anything unpleasant please life is difficult enough as it is.

I said in post #1 as you can see that I upgraded onto a cloned 7 OS. Quote: "I upgraded a cloned 7 SSD to 8 and so far so good".

Now to be absolutely explicit I cloned my 7 OS from the original drive to a spare SSD then I bought the 8 upgrade and installed it onto that drive. I didn't touch the 7 OS I just brought across my settings.

It was suggested to me that I should and could install from the upgrade so I asked Brink if this was possible and he has informed me that the upgrade requires an already working OS on it.

I did it to save money and just to try - sorry if it all sounds a bit confusing it was to me until I found out for sure.
My point being is that why would Microsoft sell an upgrade that could be fully installed for less than half of the cost of a full version it makes no sense.
I have to admit the instructions at first glance look like you can but.....

My query was about the 100MB partition that was there with the 7 install and disappeared after the upgrade.

I do hope there is no bad feelings I never intended any or would I ever.:)

Shawn now you say I need to own a qualifying OS for an upgrade so have I got it wrong then can I put just an upgrade onto a blank drive?

Now if by qualifying OS it means it can be put over a 7 install then that is what I did.

But I stand to be corrected.

I now wished I had not posted this as I was only curious about the missing 10MB partition that was there in 7.:(

Yes, let's no go there but your implication that you spoke to Brink who (where you implied) said it could not be done triggered my response with a few reasons why Brink might have responded that way. It also triggered me to ask Brink as well and he responded accordingly that it can be done (just as I had suggested previously). So, don't read any emotion into my responses; however, I will always respond based on the presentation of facts and in this case you had it wrong. No offense intended. Now you know. Good luck.

BTW, I really hope we were able to help you with this whole issue.

John,

Not sure about the 100MB partition though.

I haven't tested a clean install with a retail box Windows 8 upgrade DVD. I've heard that these may require to be installed in a qualifying OS (ex: Windows 7). However, how would they expect you to be able to transfer it to a new computer if you couldn't clean install it. I just don't have one to test with since I have ISOs instead.

The Windows 8 upgrade ISO can be clean installed without issue though.

Either way, the EULA requires that you already own a qualifying OS to qualify for the cheaper Windows 8 upgrade versus more expensive Windows 8 system builder copy.

I have tested a clean install using the retail DVD and it works perfectly. I bought it at microcenter and it contained both the x32 and x64 DVDs.

UPDATE: I first performed an upgrade from Win 7 to Win 8 and then did a clean install; however, I never attempted a clean install of Win 8 directly over Win 7 and unfortunately I only had one shot to try it that way.

Brink,

I have a test rig available where I can reinstall Win 7 (via system image) and proceed from there using the Win 8 Pro Upgrade retail discs if you need me to do some specific testing in that area. If so, just PM me with the particulars and I'll get it done.

Thank you for confirming the retail box DVD. I thought that it would as well.

Usually I do a clean install at boot on an empty drive instead, but it'll work either way. :)

Um now I am a bit confused now as I only have my OEM 7 DVD's and two 8 Pro upgrade DVD's.

I think Justatest may have thought that I have an 8 in either the OEM or retail version installed but I haven't - the 8 I have running on this laptop originally had 7 installed on it. I just put the upgrade disk into the optical drive and followed the prompts and it installed.

I am sorry that I maybe could have been a bit more explicit perhaps in point form - my main concern was being curious where the 100MB partition that was made when I installed the 7 had gone.

I just read it as I needed a qualifying OS that is Vista 7 or 8 running and then install the 8 Pro on top of that by inserting the disk and follow the prompts which is basically what I did.

I see J did try the way I did it and it worked - an 8 over the 7 and I can only speak for myself I mucked up the first try by downloading too many of the free apps so I had to wipe the drive and redo the install of 7 (I cloned the original drive) and then installed the 8.

Sorry for the confusion perhaps I should never have asked:eek:.

I think you are still confused because everything should work as previously described:

Scenario:
You have Windows 7 installed
You upgrade that Win 7 installation using the Win 8 Pro upgrade disc
Note:
At this point some have experienced problems due to upgrading Win 7 to Win 8 instead of having a pure OS installation and/or some just don't feel comfortable having an upgraded PC because they fear there may be problems down the road.

Question:
What to do?

Answer:
You take the same Window 8 Pro Upgrade disc and do a "clean install" to the just upgraded installation.

Note:
The reason this can be done is because your newly upgraded rig will pass the validation test of the upgrade Pro disc.

You now follow Brink's tutorial and wipe the hard drive clean during the process; thereby, doing a "clean install."

The end result is you have a brand new Win 8 Pro installation with no trace that Win 7 ever existed.

I hope this information helps you.

Hi there
just an addition -- if you want to get rid of the 100MB system partition (if it still exists) then just boot up a version of partition wizard or gparted and delete the partition and expand the OS partition to fill the empty space. Now set the "C" partition to ACTIVE or you won't be able to complete the next part.

Boot Windows -- it will BSOD so you need to insert the Windows recovery disk and do a repair windows. It should boot up after a few minutes and the whole of W8 should now be in a single partition -- but having the single 100MB partition is no big deal -- just ensure that if it exists back it up as well as the "C" partition when doing an OS backup.

BTW BEFORE attempting deleting partitions etc BACKUP both the 100MB partition AND the "C" partition just in case your system presents other problems.

Cheers
jimbo

I am going to mark as solved as I feel I have made a big mistake in being curious as to why the 100MB partition disappeared that was there when the 7 was installed by I am assuming default.

I have installed an upgrade of 8 twice now with no problems apart from the mistakes I made with the free apps the first time.

I just cloned the 7 drive and used the clone as the base OS for the 8 Pro upgrade I don't need to clean install it.

On last note I am about to do the same thing with the Sandy Bridge build and that has two 100MB partitions where there was only one on the laptop so I shall be very interested in what happens to them.

John,

No worries mate. You were only a bit confused about how a Windows 8 upgrade copy could be installed.

We only suggested a clean install so that you would get the 350 MB system partition added normally for Windows 8 when doing a clean install on a blank drive.

Besides, we don't learn and have fun unless we play and scrape our knees a few times. :)

I now wished I had not posted this as I was only curious about the missing 10MB partition that was there in 7.

You only cloned the C: partition, & not the Hdd with the 101 mb Unallocated, 100 System Reserved partition, & 119.04 C: partition. (Ref: SevenForums)

Now if by qualifying OS it means it can be put over a 7 install then that is what I did.

You can do a clean install, but you need to delete the Windows 7 install on both drives.
