I will be upgrading my Win 7 64 Pro but would just like to find out what I should look out for and what I can expect when doing this. Right now I don't think my Win 7 installation is very healthy as it can take up to 25 minutes before the boot up procedure is done and the PC can be used. There are also other funny issue that seem to crop up from time to time so I need to take all of this into account when I do the upgrade

Just to be safe put your personal files & folders on a usb drive.
Any serial numbers & such for programs you have added.
Any exe files you might have stored for added programs.

Have you clicked the "Help me decide" link at the bottom ?

I would suggest saving only personal stuff.
No settings.

I did a refresh On my win 8 pro & lost some personal files, hence my suggestion to save all yours on usb stick.

Before you update, Run antivirus software to get rid of the malware apparently on your computer. Then do a backup of your important data. The advice about your programs is valid. As a matter of fact, Microsoft has a compatability program you can run to determine which of your programs will run and those that are incompatible. Good Luck!

I am doing a full backup of all my files onto an external drive. I cannot find any mailware or viruses on my PC at all and I am running the following

Kaspersky as my main security software. I have run mailware bytes as well as SUPERAntiSpyware and even tried MS Security Essentials and they all come up clean.

You have received many good recommendations thus far; however, given that you have already identified that your Win 7 installation has some (unknown) issues, it might be best to save all important data, image and video files to an external device (as previously recommended) and then just "bite the bullet" and do a clean install. However, the downside to that is you will have to reinstall all of your programs but I think you'll be better off in the long run. IMHO, a little extra effort up front might payoff big time in the end. Good luck with any decision you make but I can tell you (from experience) that I only take the upgrade route, if and when it is required, and I immediately follow any upgrade with a clean install.

Yeah unfortunately I also feel that I need to do a clean install and just go that extra bit and install everything from scratch. Thanks for all the advice here really appreciated

Hi there
I hope you imaged your W7 partition(s) just in case you need or want to revert back.

Image your W8 as well once you've got it working.

Cheers
