still attempting to dual load Win 8 and Ubuntu

I have made a little progress since my last post. I can load Ubuntu but only from the live disk. I have stopped at that point because I need to know if I now proceed as was normally done with previous Windows O.S. My direct question is this: Do I shorten the partition where Windows 8 resides and then make a new partition in the acquired space, formatting that new partition with ext4, plus making a swap partition?
If I am in the wrong forum for this question, just let me know, please.

There's a LOT more involved with a new Win8 machine than just shrinking the OS partition to make some room. BEFORE you do anything else, if you're serious about dual boot, then use the Win8 option to make a "recovery drive" -- you will need that if the boot loader gets corrupted -- a frequent side-effect of dual-boot installations involving Ubuntu.

Also, do NOT use the Ubuntu installer to shrink down Win8. Doing so risks corrupting the Win8 filesystem and rendering it unbootable. ONLY use the Win8 Disk Management utility to shrink the Win8 OS partition.

You should check the Installations section on the Ubuntu forums. There are folks who can provide you instructions on what you need to do to get Ubuntu installed and working on your machine.

OEM systems that come with Windows 8 pre-installed are normally setup as UEFI and have Secure Boot enabled.

If you are trying to install Ubuntu, try using the 13.04 kernel or later since it supports Secure Boot. If you boot to the UEFI version of your install media, it should install.

A picture of your Disk Management window, taken with the snipping tool and attached using the paperclip on the Advanced replies, might help us see the situation better.
