I tried everything to install Windows 8, from USB to the old optical drive, but at the end same results. At 30% of installation progress it stuck with an unspecified error.

Hmm, the optical drive is the CD/DVD reader. Is that's what you mean??

Did you try to re-download the image because lot of users has reported that problem. Then are you trying to upgrade or Clean Install?

Yes, i meant CD\DVD.

I downloaded it like 4 times and tried clean install and upgrade, but same problem and sadly the message don't specify what occurred

Could be scratched DVD, corrupt USB or even your HDD. If you have another machine, try doing a dual booth with the media you're using and see how that go.

That's what I'd suggest as well.
But have you also tried booting from the USB itself? From what it looks like, you're installing whilst running Windows 7... perhaps there is a conflicting process inside your Windows 7 that prevents progression of the installation?

Tried outside Windows 7, same result. I will have to wait then for a later release, if any.

The only thing I can think of is that your downloaded file is corrupt. Have you tried redownloading it (if your bandwidth permits it)?

Restart the machine and press F5 (or F12 or whatever Fs) and perform a system diagnostic, this will diagnose your hardware for any abnormalies. If the test comes back all good then it must be the iso on usb that's causing the failure. Btw, have you tried a different USB?

Yes, there are many possibilities, but the only way you can find out is to test. I'm not quite sure it'd be a physical USB issue unless the formatting is incorrect... but even then it wouldn't work, right? The only possible explanation (with the USB at least) is that the ISO contents were corrupt from download, provided there are no pre-existing hardware abnormalities.

Did you predefine a partition to which you install and do you have an active partition on that drive?.

I was installing it to one partition, the one with windows 7 because i have several system images of the laptop so i was not worry about formatting or wipe the drive. i'll download the iso again and try again. Could you post a reliable link with the downloads?

From your original post I had the impression that you might have run into a problem with the active partition. But if you installed "over" win7, there might be a different problem.

I had first installed "over" my old Vista which was on a different HDD. I ran into all kinds of problems. Only after I cleaned the old Vista partition and created a new primary partition was I successful. I did, however, have another partition on the drive which was marked as active and where the Win8 installer could dump the bootmgr.

Regarding a reliable download site I cannot help you. I do not remember from where I got mine.

Upgrade came with the same error, but now i did a clean install which involved deleting the partition and it worked, Installation went smooth and completed successfully. I was so lost working with it, but after disabling the Metro interface (i don't have touchscreen anyway) i tested it and was pleasant, the boot incredibly only takes 12 seconds!! is this gonna be permanent or it just because is the preview?

Thanks again to all of you for the help and thanks to these forums.
