WINDOWS_8 UNINSTALL..Not able to boot from original XP-PRO drive.

    I decided to try WIN-8.

Installed it on extra drive I had with clean install.
Made sure that during install this seperate drive was designated as install drive.
    I'venow seen enough.

I now would like to go back and boot from my original drive(XP-PRO).

When I set it as the first boot drive in the BIOS I still boot to WIN-8.

I then reformatted the WIN-8 drive and tried agiain. Same result. Cannot get my original drive to boot into my XP-PRO OS. It boots to WIN-8.

I then removed the WIN-8 drive completley from my system. Tried to boot.. Get error message that system is missing required HDW or Software.

I am guessing that during the WIN-8 install, the install process must have altered the registry on my original XP Pro drive.

When I look into at my original XP PRO drive, all my original files and windows OS files are still there.
I just can't boot from that drive without envokong WIN-8?

Any suggestions on how I get my original HD and OS back?

Windows 8 didnt altered XP registry data, but changed your old boot files.

I sugest you to install Windows 7 on your other drive (where Win8 was); install EasyBCD 2.1 and install a boot loader on XP drive; and finally manually add the old XP install.

    Hope it helps

    Thank you!

    I'll give it a try.

I guess the other way might be........
Boot using the XP Pro install disk, go to recovery console, do a FIXBOOTcommand?

    XP?

Why not Ghost an image and then just wipe W8 but reimaging the machine?

    Thank you.

It turns out Microsoft Windows 8 Beta over wrote my C:\ drive MBR during installation. What's surprising about this is I installed WIN-8 to a completely different drive than my C:\ drive for just the reason I didn't want to repartition it and didn't want any chance of this happening.

In any event I used "PARTION MAGIC" which has an "REWRITE MBR" function. Worked Like a charm

    Thanks again for the response!

When installing a new OS it will look for existing boot files and use them.

If you want a completely separate installation, pick your OS from BIOS, then just disconnect the old OS hard drive when you install the new one.
This will give you two completely separate installations, either can be deleted with no effect on the other.

Thank you,..........Yes Dave, Unfortunately I found that out the hard way!
Even though I installed an a seperate and clean drive it found my C: drive MBR and altered it.

Furtunately I have a program XXCLONE that has a 1-button "REPAIR MBR". It worked like a charm

    Thanks Ted.

I solved the problem by using a neat little program called XXCLONE.
It has a FIX MBR function. One click and it rewrote my MBR and I was able to recapture and reboot my C: drive into my XP-PRO OS.

    Thanks for the response.
