    Reset PC

I had XP and installed W8 over it. Thinking that i can reset PC and it will revert back to XP but noooo it wasn't like that. Was asking for CD/Repair Disc. I inserted the oem XP CD in and it too was not working.

    Not impressed.

Not sure if there is a question in there.
You can install a new OS over an old one but it will not work as such. All the old stuff is stuck into a WINDOWS OLD folder so all your files are still intact.
Too late now, but you really need a separate partition to install to, or a virtual drive.
Not much more to add at the moment.
    Cheers

It was on a test machine so nothing lost

Point was the Reset PC option as i read it is to reset your PC to the previous state without lost of files. I couldnt even reset it, as it asks for recovery CD. What good is this Reset PC option without a recovery CD?

Has anyone managed to Reset PC to previous state/OS?

    Hello,

The Reset option in Windows 8, if that is what you meant, is to reset Windows 8 completely back to default. It is basically the same as doing a clean install of Windows 8 again, or factory recovery of Windows 8 on a OEM computer.

Currently, it does require that the Windows 8 installation media (DVD/USB) be inserted/connected before being able to reset though. Hopefully, it may not in the final release.

    Reset Windows 8

    Hope this helps.

Hmmm i read it as what it states.

Surely "Putting it back to the way it was originally" means putting it back to before i installed W8?

Please be reasonable. Any kind of recovery needs an image/backup to recover from. A factory restore recovers using the factory partition or recovery disks, an upgrade can recover from windows.old, a system recovery can recover from a previously created system image or system restore points. Win8 cannot conjure XP out of the ether, thats why right now it requires the install media.

Sorry but no. That was in reference to Windows 8 computers only, and what seems like for a Windows 8 factory recovery for future Windows 8 OEM computers.

Not entirely true. A system recovery may only include sytem files recovery and does not impact personal files or software installed as in when you do a "R" from Windows CD. This is different to say a complete system restore which requires wiping the whole system and dumping a captured image over it (ie Ghosting).

I'm fine with the Reset asking for MS key etc but at the start when it specifically want a pre-made recovery disc on the system you had previously or some other CD which is not a Windows CD, that threw me.

W8 Reset PC should be made similar to restoring from system respore points. From a non-it user
"Putting it back to the way it was originally" should mean that. That said does the system tell you to create a recovery disc before preceeding with the reset, i cannot recall?

    Hello Aem,

There's no need to create a separate recovery disc since you could use the same media (ex: USB/DVD) that you used to install Windows 8 with.
