Installed Windows 8 Pro OEM, got Windows 8 (no Pro)

A friend asked me to help him dual boot a Dell Inspiron laptop.

He had Windows 7 Pro and wanted to try out Windows 8 Pro, so he bought an OEM installation disk.

I set up a second partition and did a clean install of Windows 8 Pro into it (using the .\sources\setup.exe installer).

I did not notice anything unusual in the installation, except it never asked for a product key.

After the install, the System control panel shows 'Windows 8' (not Pro) and the system was activated with some sort of OEM key. We never entered any key, so I don't know how it came up with that.

I tried to change the product key, but it would not accept the key from the installation disk.

I don't understand what went on here, can anyone suggest what happened and what I should do to fix this?

During the boot screen, both OS's show up as choices and the advanced options are all there and everything seems to work fine, but it isn't Windows 8 Pro that somehow got 'automatically' activated, it is the 'basic' version.

In the system panel where the windows 8 logo is, in that blue color, mine too just says windows 8 but just for the logo part. If you look at the windows edition to the left of the logo, mine says Windows 8 Pro. Have a look at mine and compare to what yours says.

I am not with my friend, so I can't do that, but at the time, I did try to find things like - the Group policy admin console and stuff like that - and they were not available.

It looked like a 'basic' setup.

But besides that, just where did that activation key come from? The numbers did not match anything like the DVD license key.

It's as if it got the key from BIOS or something like that - a remnant of a DELL install image.

I'm really puzzled why there was no key asked.

It's as if it got the key from BIOS or something like that.
If a PC came from the manufacturer with Windows 8 pre-installed, then yes a key would be in the BIOS. Do you know if they bought it with Windows 8 and then downgraded to Windows 7?

I don't know, I'll ask the next time I see him. It is possible. I remember seeing a Windows 8 Logo sticker on the bottom of the laptop. If that is the case, could I use the 'slmgr.vbs /upk' command to remove the key and apply the new one?

I was going to try that, but it made me nervous to play around with the license - I don't know much about that aspect of the software.

Just to add to that - in the UK it's currently cheaper to buy a boxed version of the Windows 8 Pro Pack from another retailer, rather than using the option to "buy online" from within Add Features. You may find it's also true where you are.

OK, what you said.

But still...

I installed a disk that said Windows 8 Pro (OEM). It was purchased with the understanding that that version would be installed.

Shouldn't the installation process make that point obvious? (IE that I got a different version)?

The guy bought a disk that should install Win 8 Pro. If it didn't install that shouldn't I be made aware that something else was going on?

This licencing thing is not very clear.

Wouldn't a Windows 8 basic (core ) be cheaper ( if money was a consideration?).

Yeah I agree it's not very clear, and I don't know how you'd do what you wanted without the OEM disk to move it from Windows 7 to 8.

As I understand it, you haven't "used up" the OEM licence though (because the PC already had a licence burnt into the motherboard) so you could use it again on another PC.

NO, as this is a Pre-installed by the OEM manufacturer, to reinstall the use of the OEM manufacturer DVD will install Windows 8 core & use the key coded in the BIOS.

Hmm... just walked down the path of SLIC tables in BIOS, Activation 3.0, KSMs, SLIC injectors...

Some of these things that get added to make certain folk's life easier makes other's more difficult, but that's life as we know it.
