Migrating from Win7 to Win8 - Dual Drive

I'm about to take the plunge and upgrade to Win8.

At present I have WIn7, with my SSD drive containing the OS and progs, and a separate hard drive with my user data on it, I would like to retain all the data on this data drive.

I will do a clean install of Win8 on my SSD drive. After I have done this what is the best way to set up my user data on my hard drive which already contains my user data? Can I just use the reg hack to point to my data drive?

    1. Open Registry Editor by type regedit from command line, and navigate toHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList.

    2. Change the value of the Default, Public, Profile Directory keys to the new location accordingly.

Then I will install my programs.

Will this method then allow my Win8 installation to see all my old desktop and user data? Is there a better way?

Thanks for any input or alternative methods.

After the installation set your paths here
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders

    Windows 8 & Windows 7 Dual Boot

Im not familiar at all with migration, however I do know about installing windows on the wrong partition!

Label your partitions if they are not already. Windows setup will identify them as just partition 0 or 1 unless you have labeled them.

Have you considered a dual boot system? I have both Win 7 and Win 8, when i had driver issues with Win 8, i was able to copy them from my Win 7 installation. I have an old HP G60 laptop, and there were some drivers not available for Win 8, but my Win 7 drivers worked perfectly.. If one system misbehaves, I can use the other to troubleshoot.

    Good luck
