Hello Brink and all of you!
Third time with you (Seven, Vista and now Eight) :p
I just got a new PC with W8 (bought by me) installed. Machine made on my design, so without branded software such as HP, Compaq, etc.. It.s a "monster PC" :p;):D
Looking at the C drive (128GB SSD) I was shocked:
Used space: 76.8 GB
Free space: 34.5 GB
Capacity: 111 GB
How is it possible that the operating system only occupies 77 GB?
please give me a hand.
Thanks in advance

Lio

PS sorry for my bad english....:(

Hi Shawn, nice to meet you again :)
The computer is completely new assembled, so it's impossible to have any old version.
I'm writing from my old computer with W7 now because the new one is still without any antivirus or connection.

Hard Disk Space - Free Up and Recover - Windows 7 Help Forums

I think I have figured out where the problem might be.
Having 64 GB of Ram could be the pagefile and hiberfil.sys.
So I have to move the paging file on a different drive, but before I need to move the whole OS from this drive to another one.
The store have mistakenly installed 8 on the 120GB SSD when it should be on the 256 GB SSD for a chance to even put 7 in a second partition on the same SSD.
According to you, considering that the PC has just arrived and nothing has been installed over W8, can I move it in that way? with True image?
Do you have some suggestions for me?

Thanks
Lio

Acronis True Image would work though. I've done it several times, moving from a spinner to my 128GB SSD.

Hi there
Faster is "relative" -- also you have to take into account that Free Macrium runs from a boot disk so don't forget to add the time shutting down and then starting up your system again (unless of course you are doing an OS rather than a data disk restore).

You also need to shut down the OS when backing it up -- Acronis can back up while you are still working.

I did have trouble with W8 Enterprise x-64 and Macrium -- whether they've fixed it or not I don't know. As far as Acronis is concerned - yes the OLD interface such as in Acronis TI 9 was far far better than the modern interface -- that seems to be the trend these day though -- take the W8 Metro GUI itself for example - ATH 2012 was a complete and utter disaster from beginning to end but ATH 2013 seems to work reliably again (still prefer the old clean interface of TI 9 though).

Remember also the Free Macrium edition doesn't backup data / folders - while backing up the OS IS important you shouldn't forget your DATA files too -- OK these can be backed up in groups / over a period but it should be done and macrium can only backup the entire disk and it doesn't work with SPANNED VOLUMES -- I have several volumes spanned that Windows sees as a single volume.

I find it's easier to handle large music libraries / multi-media data using spanned volumes -- most music playing apps seem to come unstuck if your libraries are larger than a single volume - and I have loads of 500 / 750 GB spinners on my server so spanning for me makes sense. These music apps like windows treat "spanned Volumes" as a single volume so you could get up to a volume containing nearly 1PB ( 1000 X 1 TB) if you were mad enough to want it. !!

To the OP - I have a load of applications including Photoshop CS6 and Ms office with VISIO and PROJECT as well as other applications on my system and the entire Windows system only takes around 55 GB on my 128 GB SSD. I can't see even a HUGE installation needing 60 GB or more.

Cheers
jimbo

  1. Not true, Free Macrium can do a complete system backup online without using boot disk.
  2. Since I don't have the Enterprise Edition so I can not make any comment on that but most people in this forum are using Windows 8 Pro.
  3. To restore Windows OS. You need to boot from the boot disk whether using Acronis or Macrium so what is the difference ? but one thing I know booting from Macrium Boot disk is faster than booting from Acronis Boot disk.
  4. If you are willing to pay for full version of Macrium like you did for Acronis then you can backup your data/folder however way you want. It would not be fair to compare between free and paid.

I did a clean install of Win 8 Pro + Media Center yesterday. According to WinDirStat (which is a bit ropey as it seems to ignore the Program Files\WindowsApps directory which is large) my Windows directory is 19.1 GB.

I turned off hyberfil.sys and pagefil.sys (there are tutorial here to do this) and cleared the SoftwareDistribution folder then ran recimg to make a refresh point.

recimg with my usual apps (only big one is IBM i Access) without office 2010 is 6.2 GB
recimg with office 2010 as well is 8.6GB. Strange Office takes so much space but there we are.

In your case have a look at WinDirStat - perhaps there is something massive you don't need. Certainly if it is new and you don't want to un-install an upgrade you can delete SoftwareDistribution.

This is my PC after re-enabling pagefile with 8GB:

Hi all and thanks for all the replies!
You are all "guru" for me :p

I'm still in trouble because I'm working on a PC, the old one, trying to fix the new one.I think that I first have to partition the 256 GB SSD to be able to install Seven. On a partition I should move Eight that it was up from the store and it is untouched.
Then I'll go to "clone" the entire SSD 120 GB on which it is now Eight and move it to the partition of 256 GB SSD.
How can I do this step by step?
I have True Image 2013, and even Disk Director 2011. I have been reported about a free program
" Disk Partition Manager - Aomei Partition Assistant ", but I do not know.
I hear you talk about having to make a boot disk, but it is not enough to have two operating systems momentarily copying Eight and once they are both present delete the one on the small SSD?
I have read on the forum Acronis as reported and I can confirm that I have also had that problem (which I then ignored, leaving the driver where they were).
I thought that, since this is a completely clean SSD with Eight (W8 has not yet even been activated since the computer was delivered to me yesterday) cloning a drive was easy thing ....
Please help me step by step would be helpful.
Thank you very much and if my English is not enough compresible please let me know and sorry about that

I wouldn't bother. Just install 8 again where you want. It only takes 1/2 an hour.

Your original question was about disk use though. Is this not a problem any more?

Yes it is.
I need to find a solution to move the paging file in another drive and to get rid of hiberfil.sys.

And yes, you are right, maybe the best solution should be to reinstall,
especially since they have not done anything to make the PC "ad hoc".
But before I begin I want to know how to solve for the two files of which I speak above.

Every suggestion is welcome!
Thanks again

Sorry, Lio, I should have posted the links Shawn did - it is what I meant.

I disabled hyberfil.sys as when my laptop hibernates it disabled my Wifi. The link is above but the command is "pwrcfg /h off". Starting up takes a little longer but as I only reboot once a day I don't care really about 10 seconds and my WiFi always works.

I'm not so sure about page file. I changed mine to 400mb (the minimum for Windows error reporting to work) before running recimg as recimg for some reason backs it up. Then I changed it back to system managed and it is now the same size as my RAM (8GB). I figure that MS knows more about sizing it than me :)

You have so much RAM that perhaps you don't need a pagefile at all but the OS developers know more than me and some programs require it. Certainly though don't move your pagefile onto a slower drive. That would be counterproductive. The IO subsystem is cleverer - it will keep things in memory when it can and only write pages out when it has to. The tutorial shows how to change it but keep it on a fast drive even if you reduce the size. It is just another cache really so needs to be accessible as fast as possible.

My job incidentally is performance tuning of IBM i servers. I only very occasionally force certain tables (things like calandars that don't change much) into RAM - generally the operating system knows better, especially after a little time to gather some statistics. The guys who write OS all have PHD in math and are very clever...

Thanks Shawn and Adamf and all of you.
I was waiting for an answer from Adobe forum in
order to clarify what would be the best configuration of the PC.
In brief I write here too the same questions, reminding you that the software I use the most are Photoshop with all its major plugin, Office and of course the browser.

[...]I have assembled a good PC that will be used primarily with Photoshop (at the time CS6). I use it for my website for photographs (Canon 5D mark ii) and for the photographic manipulations.
My questions are as follows:
1. Depending on the configuration you put it under, on which SSD drive should I put Windows 8?
2. Should I have a dual boot with Windows 7 for compatibility problems?
3. Is Windows 8 compatible with all major plugin? (OnOne, AlienSkin, Autofx, Nik Software).
4. Is Windows 8 compatible with actions such as Miranda, CMA, MCP, Craig's action etc?

In case I would need to have both Seven and Eight I believe that there is no choice: the two OS on the SSD and 250GB (I think ..) on the scratch disk 128GB SSD.
But in this case where do I put my programs? They are normally used to hold OS and programs on different partitions (preferably different disks). Or maybe I should give a partition of the WD Red as scratch disk and put the programs on the 128 GB SSD?

And a last question (for the moment):

Where do I put the pagefile and hiberfil.sys?

Having 64GB of RAM these two files are huge and, among other things, in a Desktop PC I would say that hibernation is useless.
What do you think? The 3TB WD is still to be partitioned and I must also add two 1TB drives that are in the current computer as a. I also have several external storage drives for backup.

Since I can still do everything, I would like to get some advice from the "gurus" I have been reading of for many years

Here is the configuration and thank you for any help you can give me.

Lio,

It's really a matter of your personal preference and what works best for you, but this is what I would do: :)

  • Install the OS on your 250 GB SSD.
  • Leave the page file on the 250 GB SSD, but reduce it's size down to about 4 GB. If you get any "no memory" or "out of memory" type errors, then increase the page file size until you no longer get them. If you move the page file to another location, then that location must also be included in a system image (if ever created) as well.
  • If you get an option to select where to install a program at during it's installation, then you could choose where you like. Personally, I like to keep everything on my OS drive, but if space is getting tight, then you could install it to another drive. Just remember that if you install it to another location, that location must also be included in a system image (if ever created) as well.
  • I would convert the 3TB HDD to GPT to be able to use all 3TB in one volume, and use it to save data, Windows Backups, and system images to.

Thanks Shawn for all the suggestions.
Starting from the last:
I read the article on the Seven forum on how to convert a drive from MBR to GPT, but I can not see the difference. I state that every time in years of formatting, I find myself asking for the differences between the partitions without ever knowing what kind of partition I should create excluding the boot disk with the operating system.
So I really would love to be able to understand this thing.

At the same time, I'm reading on hiberfile.sys and I see that if I disable it, I will disable Fast Startup too. So, since this file weighs 75% of the RAM, it take up much space and I read that I can not move as the page file (Because the Hibernate File must be readable by the bootloader, it must be stored on a specific sector of the hard drive, on the primary system partition).
So I have to keep even the hibernate.sys disk C.
So far I say the correct things?

Personally, I would just disable hibernate and fast startup. I've used both and haven't noticed that much difference in startup speed since I put my system to sleep and wake it up as needed. You could test using each method to see if you notice any difference or not. If you have hibernate enabled, then it will stay on the C: drive. That's a big junk of space since it is 75% of your 64GB RAM in size.

The main difference in this case for MBR vs GPT is that MBR can only have up to 2TB per volume/partition, while GPT can be up tp 256 TB per volume/partition on a hard drive.

Since you have a 3 TB HDD, you could convert it to GPT to have one large 3TB volume/partition. If you have multiple partitions on the drive 2TB or under, then you could just leave it as MBR if you like.
