How to dual boot Ubuntu 12.04 and Windows 8?

Hi,

I have my Windows 8 installed in my C drive and it is the only OS I have as of now. I want to install Ubuntu 12.04 alongside Windows 8. But I have read so many negative things with regards to problems in booting after installing Ubuntu alongside Windows 8.

My Win 8 is installed in UEFI mode.

Will installing Ubuntu 12.04 cause any problems in booting?

1) Windows 8 is not install in UEFI mode.

2) I would wait until the end of April to install Ubuntu, as version 13 will be out, which should work better with Windows 8.

Not sure with Ubuntu 12.04 but I've tried Zorin as a dual boot on my laptop that has windows 7 home and it did indeed dork up the boot order once I removed Zorin. Thought I messed up laptop royally but with some googling I found a simple solution. You have to use the Live CD to get into the OS, then open the terminal (cmd prompt in windows) and run a few lines of code...remove Live CD and reboot and boot order was back to normal and windows booted up.

I have Ubuntu 12.04 on a 4 GB thumb drive to play around with, which is a better option if your only interested in testing it. Otherwise, I would remove (physically) the HDD with Windows and simply install a blank HDD and install Ubuntu on it. When you're done with Ubuntu, just remove that HDD and reinstall the windows HDD. A bit of a pain but much much safer way to test different OS's.

It was fun to do and figure out....for me anyway.

Thanks for all replies. I have decided to wait till Ubuntu 13.04 is available for download.
