Setting Up Computer- A Few Questions!!

I'm a Mac guy, and I'm setting up the computer for my Uncle and having trouble just trying to do a few things.

1. He has a comcast email address- is there any way to make the mail application accept it? He is used to using Outlook Express.

2. I tried to make a Hotmail account for him, thinking maybe it would be easier for the whole Windows 8 ecosystem. But now there are two users (the same name) that show up on his computer- the main one I made for him and the stupid Hotmail account, which is still not active. How do I delete this extra account that is linked to that Hotmail account I tried to create?? Its so annoying to have two of the same name show up on the screen.

3. After I noticed the Hotmail account creation failed, I tried again at creating a Windows account. This time it I put in his current comcast email address to create a Windows account. It made me create a new, annoying password with Caps and symbols (!@#$%^...) that is very confusing to remember for the elderly man that he is. Is there any way to unlink whatever I did so he can go back to using his simple one word password? He complains enough about having to put in a password at all (as his last XP computer didn't make him)- the upper-case and symbols BS is just gonna confuse him.

Thanks for the help!!!

Let's start with the basics. Which mail client are you actually using and are you trying to establish connectivity via a POP3/SMTP configuration?

Comcast.net, yes its a pop3. I know i heard it wasn't supported and I was dreading the day I'd have to explain to my elderly uncle that he couldn't have his outlook anymore. Trying to figure the best way to go about doing this.

You can set up a gmail account to forward to pop3/imap. then you can use Microsoft Outlook and set it up there.
Not to sure about the second account.

Goto 1st acc
Goto user acc's
Delete second acc.
Then goto 1st acc user's again login with the 2nd acc's email address.
Todo this you may have to login as a "LOCAL" acc first then re-login to the 2nd acc's email address.
You will then have the one acc which is an Administrators acc with the correct email address attached...

Download and install Thunderbird for gramps. It looks and acts just like OE but its prettier. Its also fairly easy to setup because it has built-in POP3/SMTP detection parameters for Comcast, gmail, and hotmail too! Here's a screenshot and the download link:

Mozilla Thunderbird

Good luck.

The later version of Outlook Express is called Windows Live Mail, but it doesn't come with Windows 8 as standard for some reason (probably to try and get everyone using their cloud). However, it's still available as part of the Windows Essentials package, which can be downloaded from the following link (download link in bottom right of page):
Windows Essentials - Download Windows Live Essentials

Windows Mail onwards had an export option so you can export the emails he wants to keep and import them into Windows Live Mail. However, I can't remember if Outlook Express had that, or whether you had to copy the email folders manually.

Although you can use Hotmail (outlook.com) to import external pop3 accounts into it, the Windows 8 metro app won't allow you to change his 'reply-to' address, therefore he won't be able to send email under the alias of his Comcast account. So, personally I would just install the Windows Live Mail desktop email client and set it up for his Comcast email account if he want's to keep using his Comcast email address.

Does he have an Apple ID? If yes,

1. Creating an iCloud account
2. See the PC instructions

I would not use the win8 mail program no matter what--even with an upgrade from stock. Access iCloud through the Win8 desktop using a browser other than iExplorer (iE detests iCloud). I use Chrome on my Windows 7's and Win8's.

If no Apple ID, then Create an Apple ID. If he goes the iCloud route, then you'll be very ready to help him.

I totally agree with the above; however, us old folks still remember the "look and feel" of OE and Thunderbird can bring back those fond memories for us (at least for me).

Cheers!

It's settled then, I'm going with Thunderbird!! Forgot Mozilla made an email client.

Now my other questions- How do I delete that stupid extra user, and how can I revert back to just using a simple password (one that doesn't make me use numbers, symbols, or CAPS)??!! Better yet, can I by-pass having to log into the computer every time I turn on/wake up the computer all together?

Thanks a lot guys, this really helps!!!

You are very welcome. I would not login to an MS account. Use a local account (ties in with using iCloud from desktop--where another good alternative is My Yahoo from the desktop).

You also can:

1. Log On User Account Automatically at Windows 8 Startup;

2. Local Account - Switch to in Windows 8;

3. Password Protection on Wakeup - Enable or Disable in Windows 8; and

4. Lock Screen - Enable or Disable in Windows 8.
