Got Windows 8 32-bit Installed On Netbook, Most Tiles Don't Work

I installed Windows 8 on my netbook last night, I chose the 32-bit version since I only have 2GB of RAM in the ASUS Eee PC 1015PN. Windows 8 installed fine, I installed it so it would keep all of my settings and files although it only was able to keep the files.

For some reason or another the tiles in the Metro UI don't actually work. At least most don't work, the control panel one does and a few others. But the Metro version of IE and those sorts of things won't even open. Anyone else have this problem? Anyone know how to fix this?

I am having the same exact issue on my Asus 1015PE with Windows 8 Devloper Preview x86.

I registered just to bump this post.

I think the 32-bit version might just be hosed. One person said that you need a resolution of at least 1024x600, but the 10XX series of Asus netbooks run natively at that resolution.

It's either hardware or software but until the code improves and people start talking about issues and more testing is done, there is no way to tell.

My desktop is quite a beast, so I will try installing the x86 and x64 versions in virtual machines to see if I can reproduce the issue. I'll report my results in this thread... if I remember to.

If 32-bit is borked for now, 2GB is enough for a x64 OS, we'll just need an 8GB SD card to install... already tried a 4GB SD card, literally about 200MB short of what you need.

I tried plugging the netbook to a bigger monitor and it now will open more tiles like Internet Explorer. And will at least show some animation and show the logo going full screen on all the others. But most of the apps don't open, they just make the screen turn all green and I have to go back to the home screen.

I have a friend with a Mac that installed Win8 on his computer and he installed it first in a virtual machine and it didn't work and then again on his actual mac and it worked. So I tried reinstalling it on my netbook and there still isn't any change.

Really hoping some folks "in the know" hijack this thread and provide some advice.

Good to know that reinstalling won't do anything, too. Will definitely save me some time.

Sometime between now and the end of the weekend I am going to try running x86 and x64 in VM with a max resolution of 1024x600 to see if resolution is the real issue or if it's the x86 version being funny.

Remember though, this is a Developer Preview, not a Beta. It's meant for Developers to get their feet wet with the new system and tools to make apps for said system. So, despite Microsoft having promised that Windows 8 will be optimized for smaller screens and that Metro should be able to run on anything, they are quite a long ways from fully attaining that goal.

Windows Update seems to be running and pulling updates so maybe we'll get heavy code revisions in the Pre-Beta to Beta cycle much like OS X did with Snow Leopard and Lion; install preview code, get major updates through an updater without having to do a full reinstall.

We might get lucky and a Windows Update might fix this down the road. My bet is on an early 2012 Public Beta, once Developers have had some time with the Developer Preview build and there are third-party apps that take advantage of Metro and all the other new bells and whistles. By the time Windows 8 hits Beta, it should be pretty rock solid. Vista was crap, but the Beta cycle was great and the same goes for Windows 7, except Windows 7 was rock solid and awesome from Beta 1 to release.

Same problem on the MSI U100

I am having the same issue with my netbook MSI U100.

Interestingly enough, the IE tile does not work but when you switch to the desktop you can bring up IE. SO it is installed and functional.

Having the same issue, but the odd thing is, every tile/app was working fine around 9am this morning. I went to lunch, and now nothing works. I'm running on a Dell D630, non virtual environment. 3gb DDR, and 2.0ghz core 2 duo.

From what I have read you need to be using a 1024x768 resolution at the least. I have this installed in VirtualBox, but it is stuck at 800x600 and none of the tiles work.

I've been hunting for a fix for this and haven't found one yet... I'd love to get my VM working in the right resolution so I can try out the tiles.

And just like that, reinstalling Win8 on virtual box I was able to change the resolution this time... weird.

lol... I edited my post to say that and now they don't work... weird.

Ok, this is getting strange, the exact same .iso runs perfectly in virtualbox, yet using the win7 dvd/usb bootable tool I've installed it on a D630 as the only OS, and the tiles don't work......I've even tried the full blown dev build and still nothing.

How many people here have installed using the USB method? I'm thinking the USB method corrupts the install?

What is the resolution set at, 1024x768 or higher? That seems to be the biggest culprit of tiles not working.

I figured it out.....The local admin account is broken... i.e. nothing works as I was going in, enabling the local admin account, logging in as the admin and then deleting the account that I created during setup.

Ever since Win2k I've always liked to use the local admin account as my primary account, I guess MS changed this in Win8 or its broken.. If I use the user account I create during setup everything works no matter what resolution.

It's early! Whey the Beta comes out it will work. Microsoft guarantes that if your computer had Windows 7 Installed when you bought it; it will work 100% with full support from the manufacturer. So what does this mean for you? Most likely when windows 8 comes out when you go to install the OS you will need to configure Windows of the first launch. You will choose tablet and go from there. Just give it some time. It way to early to jump off of the brige.

Here are the requirements, and yeah it's the resolution that's the issue. I hope Microsoft changes that before the final version since many people have screens that aren't 1024x768.

  • 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
  • 1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)
  • 16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)
  • DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver
  • Taking advantage of touch input requires a screen that supports multi-touch
  • To run Metro style Apps, you need a screen resolution of 1024 X 768 or greater

A curious thing that I noticed was that the IE tile didn't work until after I had opened it from the desktop. So now I can open it from the tile but can't open anything else that is not local. I think I'll go back now and change the resolution of this Dell D430 to 1200x800.

Hmm... This driver won't give me 1200x800. 1024x768 and 800x600 are the only choices, but 1024x768 does the trick with the tiles. Is everyone else stuck with limited resolutions? Maybe I'll try a Win7 driver.

I have the same problem as well. I didn't notice the tiles weren't working until after I installed Office 2010. They were working before I installed Office, but not after (green screen). Can someone verify installing an application (non metro..like Office) that puts a non metro style tile on the metro desktop breaks the current metro tiles?

Whew...that's a lot of metro!

Just an FYI, there are two separate versions of IE on the 8 install, the metro version and the desktop version. Just because your IE works on the desktop doesn't have anything to do with the metro version. The Metro version works just like all the other metro apps and doesn't work with flash and is optimized for the touch experience and full screen and no visual tool bars. The desktop version looks and works just like the normal IE with menus and tool bars. Just wanted to toss that out there so you know why you have IE in one place but not on metro view.

My Computer

I installed Office 2010 and they work fine and the other metro apps still work fine. The office tiles open the Office app over on the desktop but you still click to open them in the metro view. I did a full install on a desktop so I can't do touch but everything works and looks like it should with mouse and keyboard, you can get close to swipe with click, hold, and drag of the mouse.

Win 8 Dev Preview Tile failure

I'm not sure that the resolution is a factor. I downloaded the 64 bit (non-tool) version and installed it on my Dell Precision T750 - 12 core - 12 Gig - 1.5 Ts. This machine has two high end graphics cards with 1 Gig on each and are running at 1920 x 1200 resolution. All of the tiles are non-functional, (same green screen described above), except Explorer / control panel and the desktop tiles. I then installed a 32 bit version on another Dell laptop with higher than 1280 x 800 resolution and the same tiles failed to function. I have done a search for a couple of the tile apps and have found that they have been installed on the hard drive but the new Win 8 technology prevents them from being run by double-clicking on them.

Just a little more information with this problem.
