Got Windows 8 32-bit Installed On Netbook, Most Tiles Don't Work

  1. #11

I figured it out.....The local admin account is broken... i.e. nothing works as I was going in, enabling the local admin account, logging in as the admin and then deleting the account that I created during setup.

Ever since Win2k I've always liked to use the local admin account as my primary account, I guess MS changed this in Win8 or its broken.. If I use the user account I create during setup everything works no matter what resolution.

It's early! Whey the Beta comes out it will work. Microsoft guarantes that if your computer had Windows 7 Installed when you bought it; it will work 100% with full support from the manufacturer. So what does this mean for you? Most likely when windows 8 comes out when you go to install the OS you will need to configure Windows of the first launch. You will choose tablet and go from there. Just give it some time. It way to early to jump off of the brige.

umm...who's jumping off the bridge? I'm simply stating the apps don't work logged in as Local admin.

Windows 8 on my netbook, Windows 7 on my desktop, Ubuntu Server 10.04 on my servers.

Here are the requirements, and yeah it's the resolution that's the issue. I hope Microsoft changes that before the final version since many people have screens that aren't 1024x768.

    • 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
    • 1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)
    • 16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)
    • DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver
    • Taking advantage of touch input requires a screen that supports multi-touch
    • To run Metro style Apps, you need a screen resolution of 1024 X 768 or greater

A curious thing that I noticed was that the IE tile didn't work until after I had opened it from the desktop. So now I can open it from the tile but can't open anything else that is not local. I think I'll go back now and change the resolution of this Dell D430 to 1200x800.

Hmm... This driver won't give me 1200x800. 1024x768 and 800x600 are the only choices, but 1024x768 does the trick with the tiles. Is everyone else stuck with limited resolutions? Maybe I'll try a Win7 driver.

I have the same problem as well. I didn't notice the tiles weren't working until after I installed Office 2010. They were working before I installed Office, but not after (green screen). Can someone verify installing an application (non metro..like Office) that puts a non metro style tile on the metro desktop breaks the current metro tiles?

    Whew...that's a lot of metro!

Just an FYI, there are two separate versions of IE on the 8 install, the metro version and the desktop version. Just because your IE works on the desktop doesn't have anything to do with the metro version. The Metro version works just like all the other metro apps and doesn't work with flash and is optimized for the touch experience and full screen and no visual tool bars. The desktop version looks and works just like the normal IE with menus and tool bars. Just wanted to toss that out there so you know why you have IE in one place but not on metro view.

I installed Office 2010 and they work fine and the other metro apps still work fine. The office tiles open the Office app over on the desktop but you still click to open them in the metro view. I did a full install on a desktop so I can't do touch but everything works and looks like it should with mouse and keyboard, you can get close to swipe with click, hold, and drag of the mouse.

Win 8 Dev Preview Tile failure

I'm not sure that the resolution is a factor. I downloaded the 64 bit (non-tool) version and installed it on my Dell Precision T750 - 12 core - 12 Gig - 1.5 Ts. This machine has two high end graphics cards with 1 Gig on each and are running at 1920 x 1200 resolution. All of the tiles are non-functional, (same green screen described above), except Explorer / control panel and the desktop tiles. I then installed a 32 bit version on another Dell laptop with higher than 1280 x 800 resolution and the same tiles failed to function. I have done a search for a couple of the tile apps and have found that they have been installed on the hard drive but the new Win 8 technology prevents them from being run by double-clicking on them.

Just a little more information with this problem.

Installed SSD on an Atom-based Netbook, performance issues
