unable to print after upgrading from win 7 to win 8

I am a competent computer user. I recently upgraded from win 7 to win 8. Since then I have tried everything I can think of to get my printer (an HP CP1700) to print for me but have been unable to do so.

When windows searches for the printer, it doesn't find it. However, I manually installed it using the windows update service and it shows as an available printer in the devices and windows screen. It is set up as USB001 virtual port correctly. (It worked well on this in win 7)

When I try to print, the job flashes on the 'see what's printing' window for only part of a second and then disappears. However the job never actually reaches the printer which stays on 'ready to print'.

As part of my troubleshooting techniques I tried using the HP DOT4_001 print device (which appeared as a port choice). If I use this option the print job appears on the 'see what's printing' window as 'printing' which then changes to 'printing-error'. Interestingly, the printer does make a noise or two during this process but doesn't print anything.

(I have win 7 on another computer and if I hook the printer up to that computer it prints fine, so the problem is definitely win 8 upgrade related.)

I have unininstalled, reinstalled, rebooted, retried, etc. etc. all to no avail. Help would be appreciated. If I can't get this printer to print under win 8, I will be returning the software and returning to win 7 on this computer.

thanks for replies but problem not solved

I went to the HP site as part of my troubleshooting and they indicated that microsoft had a driver or the printer. That's why I used the windows update feature in add printer. They do have a printer driver listed for this printer and that is the one that I installed.

The win 7 printer driver was part of the os and is not available as a separate package. I could copy over the gpd file but am unable to run a non exe in compatibility mode so that won't work either.

From my experience, Microsoft update has not been a reliable source when it comes to providing updated manufacturer drivers. I would contact HP support, explain the situation, and politely ask them to provide you with a location to download the Windows 8 driver "directly" from HP. BTW, their response really sounds unprofessional; in that, they elude to the fact that they provided the driver to Microsoft so you can go get it from them. Now, I have an old HP 1020 Laser Jet, and they took the time to post a Win 8 driver for my printer; however, I now get a driver spooling error (in event viewer) every time it prints but I just ignore it because it does print. Good luck.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have already tried that. It seems that for whatever reason, my printer doesn't want to respond to win 8. It seems I have to make a decision to either keep windows 8 on this machine and print from my other computer or over the network --- Or, I will downgrade to windows 7 which works perfectly with this printer.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I had to buy a new printer for Windows 7, but it works with Windows 8 thank goodness. Sometimes it's cheaper to buy a new printer than to buy ink!!
Do you have Office 2013 installed? When I installed that My printer wouldn't print from any program. It changed my default print to print to OneNote. After I changed it back to my HP printer I could print again. Just a thought

I'm still using office 2007. I haven't installed anything at all other than upgrading to win 8. I'll keep my eyes out for solutions, but as you say, this is an old (albeit expensive and efficient) printer. Perhaps it is time to bite the bullet and upgrade.

Thanks again,

Allanah
