Hi, I just registered just to ask for this particular dilemma I have. Since it wasn't even posted on the "sticky" up top -- I might as well ask about it.
Since Feb. 28 these are the updates that I have installed:
-Platform Update for Windows 7 x64-Edition (KB2670838)
-Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB915597 (Definition 1.145.817.0)
-Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2739159)
-Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2779562)
Prior to Feb. 28 was just 4 updates for Windows Defender. Recently, around the start of March, my PC has been freezing up quite a lot of times, though it won't go to BSOD. Hours and minutes later, it still works, then came that time when I re-booted my laptop, and it went on a Disk Check. I skipped it once. However, when I was about to log-in, my laptop just went off and restarted again, I did the same thing twice -- still the same results.
During Disk Check, I noticed it was deleting quite a lot of files, I just put the monitor to sleep and disregarded everything. When it was finished, I logged-in and notice a few things:
-I can no longer click on the volume control on the taskbar.
-My antivirus (avast! 7) won't start/work.
-My Photoshop notifies me of a "corrupted file."
I tried restarting again my laptop, and this time it went to Disk Check again, I looked at it carefully, and I notice some .dll files are being deleted. This keeps happening until this time of post.
Right now, I'm still downloading Windows 8 Pro. And before I install this, I wanna ask something
1. Can I upgrade to Windows 8 Pro ("Keep personal files only") -- even if my Windows 7 is already corrupted?
2. What are the files covered by that option (as mentioned above) -- based on MS, it'll keep my "User" folder, how about my Libraries (Docs, Music, Pictures, and Videos)?
The reason why I want to try that option above is because, I have a 465GB HDD on this laptop, it's loaded with videos of Animes (Naruto, Bleach, One Piece, Fairy Tail, etc) -- approx. 402GB is consumed -- and those series are hard to find -- I don't want to clean up everything coz I don't have the luxury to download them back all (sucky internet connection).
My worry is, if I upgrade to Win8 -- it might be corrupted as Win7.
Thanks in advance for any answers.

A little history of my Laptop:
I bought it pre-installed with Windows Vista Home Premium x86 -> I "clean" installed it with Windows 7 Ultimate x64 (back when it was released).
