Title says it. Sorry if there has already been a thread, I've tried everything, and it seems nothing works. Makes it to 72 percent on "Keep files, settings and apps", "Keep files" and "Nothing". Can some suggest any other methods that might work? By the way, I'm using a USB to install the upgrade.

Things I've tried:

Disable video drivers
Delete temp
Delete other user accounts
Only Windows services
No start-up programs

Welcome to EightForums.

Have you tried a clean install.
You need to reinstall al your programs in Windows 8.

Upgrade to Windows 8 with only a product key - Microsoft Windows

Microsoft said:
Make sure you’re on the PC you want to upgrade. This must be a PC that is currently running Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP with Service Pack 3 (SP3), Windows 8 Release Preview, Windows 8 Consumer Preview, or Windows Developer Preview. (Windows 8 Setup checks that your PC meets all system requirements before it installs Windows 8.)

Have your product key handy. You can find it in your online order information, in the confirmation email for your purchase, or on the packaging. The product key will look something like this:
XXXXX- XXXXX- XXXXX- XXXXX- XXXXX

Make a backup of everything you want to keep. Save it somewhere you can get to it later, like an external drive or a DVD.

Always better to do a clean install.

Hi there
in addition to the above posts the Ms wording seems deliberately obtuse as it implies you have to be RUNNING W7 to insyall the upgrade version of W8.

To clarify -- you need to be running a legit "Upgradeable" Os in order to DOWNLOAD a key and the W8 upgrade.

Now you can make your .ISO as per the tutorials and do a CLEAN install -- you only need the Legit Upgradeable OS ONCE in order to qualify for the upgrade and download it (which is actually a FULL copy of W8).

If you think about it for a minute - say after installing your new W8 system you have some sort of accident, the hardware fails (Hdd broken) etc or some other unpredictable event that effectively renders your machine useless - how are you expected to re-install.

What about adding new hardware which could perceivably require a re-install of the OS.

Would you have to re-install W7 again and go through the whole process -- no I think not somehow.

Hope this clarifies the matter.

(BTW you should ALWAYS image your OS frequently so you can recover it easily instead of having to do a re-install --but that's another issue).

Cheers

Use first 4 steps here (you'll be left with unallocated space--which is what you want IMO): SSD / HDD : Optimize for Windows Reinstallation - Windows 7 Support Forums.

Then, go here: Clean Install - Windows 8.

Do no more to the partition so you'll get the 350 MB System Reserved partition.

If you have activation issues, then go here: Clean Install with Windows 8 Upgrade.
