Solved re-installation

I've just started using Windows 8 which was already pre-installed on my Compaq CQ58 laptop.

I assume that all the files to do with Win 8 are on the hard drive (D:\ Recovery) but I want to transfer all the installation and utilities (sound, graphics etc.) files onto a DVD and run a clean install if or when I ever have to format the hard drive.

Two questions really ...
What files do I copy and how do I do it?
I use Nero.

Would appreaciate any help please.

My thanks in advance.

Michael.

Did you make the OEM manufacturer's Recovery Disks?

Creating HP Recovery media

HP Recovery Manager is a software program that offers a way to create recovery media after you
successfully set up the computer. HP Recovery media can be used to perform system recovery if the
hard drive becomes corrupted. System recovery reinstalls the original operating system and the
software programs installed at the factory, and then configures the settings for the programs. HP
Recovery media can also be used to customize the system or aid in the replacement of a hard drive.

Using HP Recovery media to recover

You can use HP Recovery media to recover the original system. This method can be used if your
system does not have an HP Recovery partition or if the hard drive is not working properly.
1. If possible, back up all personal files.
2. Insert the first HP Recovery disc you created into the optical drive on your computer or into an
optional external optical drive, and then restart the computer.

re-iinstallation etc

after being away for a week or so, i've read all the links that were in the various posts and have come to the conclusion that i'm now even more confused than ever

seems like there are more steps than i care to think of that i'd have to go through to run a new install when i was hoping it would be a simple thing to do like in xp.

perhaps i should just "bite the bullet", cut my losses and buy a new windows 8 installation with its unique key code and use that should the need to re-format the hard drive becomes necessary.

talking of key codes, i also ran keyfinder and it came up with the normal 5 x 5 alpha-numeric character code. then while i was trawling through all the various settings via control panel, one of them came up with a key code showing 4 groups of 'x's but with alpha-nummeric characters in the 5th. group. the last 5 character group given by keyfinder did not match the group given in the settings so i don't know which one applies to the laptop but this shouldn't be a problem for me if i run a new installation with its own key code ....... or will it ... ??

what would be the most suitable (not necessarily the most costly) installation version to use? also, would the utility programmes ... audio/graphics/lan etc. be on the same disk or would i have to get a separate disk to suit the motherboard? i would suspect the latter.

thanks in advance ...
michael.

When using a Retail Windows 8 DVD, to reinstall, the installer will see the Product key code in the BIOS & install with that key.

You need the HP Drivers & App's DVD or downloads to reinstall.

re-installation etc ...

ah ... thanks for the key info ...
so i take it that the key code that comes with the new installation dvd won't be needed.
that's fine ... saves me wondering when the time comes.
i've already downloaded all the motherboard drivers so one job less to do.
thanks to everyone who's helped me on this with their suggestions and comments.
it was all very much appreciated.
