Upgrading motherboard and processor - Windows 8

Hey guys. I can't find a concrete answer anywhere to this question and this forum seems to be the most knowledgeable/helpful.

Right now I have an asus h61-le-CSM motherboard with EFI; it's a little older with a i3 2120 processor. On Friday I'm upgrading to a Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD5H with a i7 processor.

Right now, I have windows 8 installed. I believe I purchased the upgrade version, although the receipt from microsoft in my e-mail has no mention of the word upgrade, it just says Windows 8 Pro. I am going to want to do a clean install with this stuff which I am capable of doing, however I don't know what I need to do to keep Windows. Will I be ok just re-entering my key? Can anyone help me out? Thanks,

-Doug

What sort of Win8 install medium (media) do you have? For future reference, will you be installing under BIOS? UEFI? If you downloaded, then you purchased an upgrade. See this tutorial on Windows 8 Upgrade ISO - Download or Create. Having created an upgrade install disc or upgrade install flash drive using the ISO you can do a clean install. Activation can be accomplished one way or another given your product key.

I don't have any install medium yet. I was going to get a USB 3.0 drive on my way home from work and use the guide you mentioned to install it on that. I was under the impression that installing under UEFI is the way to go? So I won't have to buy a new copy of Windows or anything then? That was my biggest fear. I won't have to deactivate it or anything? Just make an install disk, do a clean install and type in the key like I did before and I'm good to go?

Running 32 bit or 64 bit? Are you using UEFI now? Sure you want to continue? Not that you shouldn't want to.

Do you mean you are going to make a USB 3.0 upgrade install flash drive? Same Windows 64 bit will apply UEFI or not. Might have to buy a new copy--retail upgrade install set (or the equivalent). Problem is your created install disc may not have full UEFI support. See * below. There is a difference WRT what you did before; you now are not running an upgradeable prior OS. You will have to activate your new clean installation.

The app theog mentions is the same as in option two of the link I provided earlier: Windows 8 Upgrade ISO - Download or Create.

Study all the tutorials below thoroughly before beginning your installation. Be sure you are well backed up before beginning.

Use UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) - Install Windows 8 (using install DVD with UEFI support or a UEFI bootable flash drive).* You will be referred to both of these tutorials as you proceed: Clean Install - Windows 8 and Clean Install with Windows 8 Upgrade. Activation is covered in this tutorial. Activation complexities can occur. Your last resort would be phone activation.

*Your install DVD may not have full UEFI support. In this regard, you will need to acquire (purchase or create) a retail upgrade 64-bit install DVD (or the equivalent) or to create a UEFI bootable flash drive. See UEFI Bootable USB Flash Drive - Create in Windows.

I am running Windows 8 64 bit. I am not using uefi right now because my motherboard is older and doesnt have it.

I was going to buy a flash drive and make a usb install drive. What do you mean about upgrade install? And yes I would like to use uefi when i get my new motherboard.

You would be using an upgrade install medium to do a clean install. Is this what you are asking about?

I guess so, I didn't realise there was a difference. Can I dl the normal ISO and activate it with my current key then?
