Installing windows 8 with Ubuntu 12.10 already in place

Hi,

I'm wanting to upgrade my laptop to Windows 8. I currently have Ubuntu 12.10 installed alongside Windows 7. I've had a lot of trouble getting ubuntu installed and working (AMD graphics

) so I'd like to just leave that as is.

Is it possible to just install windows 8 over W7 in the same partition? How do I go about doing that? Is it as straight forward as just putting the disk in or is the whole secure boot thing going to cause issues? I want to do a clean install rather than using the upgrade assistant to install W8 over W7.

Cheers

If you install Windows 8, it will replace your current bootloader and quite likely Ubuntu will no longer boot. Here is an article that will help to restore GRUB bootloader after Windows has overwritten it.

Thanks for your reply. So the only problem *should* be reinstalling the bootloader for Ubuntu? I wasn't sure if the secure boot thing would cause problems or not?

Boot-Repair is included in Ubuntu-Secure-Remix (multi-languages, ok for Wifi, LVM and RAID, 32 or 64bit, based on Ubuntu 12.10, Boot-Repair shortcut in the desktop, the 64bit version is UEFI-compatible)

This is what the article says, but I have never dealt with a secure boot UEFI computer before, so I can't tell you for sure.

Welcome to EightForums.

If you had Secure Boot ENABLED, Windows 7 would not boot.

Secure Boot is not part of Windows 8, it is part of your uEFI/BIOS firmware.

If I buy a computer with Windows 8 and Secure Boot, will I still be able to install Linux? - Super User

First of all, Secure Boot is not something that Microsoft came up with. They're the first to widely implement it, but they didn't invent it. It's part of the UEFI specification, which is basically a newer replacement for the old BIOS that you're probably used to. UEFI is basically the software that talks between the OS and the hardware. UEFI standards are created by a group called the "UEFI Forum", which is made up of computing industry representatives including Microsoft, Apple, Intel, AMD, and a handful of computer manufacturers.
