Windows 8 NOT compatible with my HP XW6200 workstations!!!

Well I decided I would see for myself what 8 was all about. I began an installation this morning after paying FIRST the Windows 8 upgrade fee for the install.

The preinstaller said my machine might not be compatible because it appears that my processor would not support NX, but it would try to turn it on when installing.

Well.....after nearly an hour of installing at the very end it says...sorry there was an error and your system cannot be installed and we are returning you to your original state.

I am STUNNED that Win 8 will not run on something as recent or advanced as an HP XW6200 workstation. What the heck is Microsoft thinking to design an OS that will leave out such recent and advanced equipment.

I've looked all over HP, MS, and the net to see if there is anything about these workstations and NX, but I cant find any info.

On HP website they simply say there is no information on whether or not the xw6200 is compatible.

I cant find anything in the BIOS to turn on NX.

I have several of the xw6200 and many more xw6400s which I am sure will be the same issue.

This really sucks!

Looked again....went through every single option, nothing that even resembles NX and nothing that comes close to XD.

Was looking forward to trying win 8 but doesnt look like it is going to run on the xw6200. Going to try a xw6400 later.

Courtneydidit are you familiar with the xw6400 workstation? I looked all through the BIOS and did not find anything like that. Can you be more specific to help me? I would really like to try installing. Thanks

xw6200 workstations uses Intel Xeon (Nocona), which is quite equivalent to Intel Pentium 4 (Prescott), which i believe doesn't support XD-Bit (Intel variant of NX-Bit).

More info here:
x86-64 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

See the point:
Early Intel CPUs with Intel 64 also lack the NX bit of the AMD64 architecture. <-- The key point to your problem with x6200 workstation.

This really sucks!

Actually it's the CPU that isn't compatible with Windows 8, not the workstation.

This work station uses socket 775 so an old Core 2 Duo Wolfdale or Conroe CPU would work fine.

And because it uses socket 775 you could install a basic Intel core 2 duo for well under 50 bucks and not only would those machines would work with Windows 8, they would gain a performance increase with the superior CPU.

I have two Nocona 3.2Ghz on a xw6200 and running Windows 8 Pro x64.

The NX feature is named otherwise it the BIOS of this Workstation.

Make sure you have BIOS version 2.10 - I think it was not in the original firmware.

As for the xw6400, I have no idea.

When you run the Windows 8 assesment tool, it cannot see this processor feature unless your enable it through BIOS first (F10 at boot) . If you rerun the tool after enablng this BIOS feature, it will see the NX CPU feature which is present for Nocona Xeon.
