Hi there, I have a genuine copy of Windows 8 Pro which I got from the educational institution in which I study. Now, my license is for Windows 8 Pro. Today, I got an email from Microsoft saying I must activate Windows 8 Media Center by 31st of January. I did that and entered my Product key and i upgraded to Windows 8 Pro with Windows Media Center in one PC restart. Now my product key is not working on this version of Windows and it says that my license key is not valid for Media Center edition. How do I get back to only Pro edition. Please reply on your earliest. thanks.

Thank you, Brink. I am going to try it. I really want to get back to Windows 8 Pro. I have upgrade to WMC just an hour ago.

Just out of curiosity, what key did Muhammadian use?

When I downloaded the WMC upgrade, I received a separate, new product key for that. The reminder email that I received from Microsoft today, that said that I must use the key by the end of January, also included a copy of the new key.

The original Win8 Pro product key would not serve for activating WMC.

Nothing posted above leads me to believe that M. used the wrong key, but also it's not absolutely clear that the correct one was used.

The key which was provided by my university was the one that activated the Pro version. But today, I opened up my email inbox and got an email from Microsoft with a new product key saying that I must activate Windows Pro with WMC by 31st of January. Since both the product keys were different, therefore I thought that it would work. And when I followed the link Microsoft suggested, it asked me for the product key and I entered the one I received through email and it accepted it. Then it restarted my PC and said that the version I am using is not activated. Therefore, I reverted back to Pro version and it is now working again with the previous product key (provided by my university). Thank you very much everyone for your help.

The same freaking thing happened to me as well. I also had to revert back to 8 Pro. What has me stumped, if the key is valid why does it deactivate the windows key or the WMC key. It's not like I use WMC and probably wont. I just cant figure out why the key fails to activate.

Agreed with bassfisher! I am thinking that if the key was not going to work, then why did the "Add Features to Windows" dialog box accepted the key the first time I put into (the key I received through email). If it was not going to work, it should have denied BEFORE upgrading to WMC so users don't face the problem in reverting back to Pro edition. I was panicked for the first time and shocked because if there was no "revert" option, I would have clean installed my Windows again and installed all software and updates all over again, which is really time-consuming if you are a working person or student. Well, thanks to the Forum members, that I have reverted back to Windows 8 Pro and now my key (the first one, which I received from the University, not email), is working again. By the way, Microsoft should look over this issue when converting from Pro to WMC edition. Thank you very much for your assistance and patience.
