[DEL]A Windows UEFI install does not like extended partitions on internal or external drives. You will need to find some way to remove or convert the Extended partition.[/DEL]

Testing right now seems to indicate Windows 8 is more tolerant of Logical partitions than Windows 7....so I need to put this on hold for now.

or

Upgrade to Windows 8 with only a product key - Microsoft Windows

Microsoft said:
Make sure you’re on the PC you want to upgrade. This must be a PC that is currently running Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP with Service Pack 3 (SP3), Windows 8 Release Preview, Windows 8 Consumer Preview, or Windows Developer Preview. (Windows 8 Setup checks that your PC meets all system requirements before it installs Windows 8.)

Have your product key handy. You can find it in your online order information, in the confirmation email for your purchase, or on the packaging. The product key will look something like this:
XXXXX- XXXXX- XXXXX- XXXXX- XXXXX

Make a backup of everything you want to keep. Save it somewhere you can get to it later, like an external drive or a DVD.

Always better to do a clean install.

Set uEFI/BIOS firmware to boot UEFI & Legacy

Check your manual for settings.

I have been doing some testing with Windows 8 and it appears it is not as sensitive to Logical partitions as Windows 7.

So maybe something else is involved. Are you using the Boot Device Menu to select the Windows boot manager for your UEFI install?

UEFI, for the most part, is not even widely supported. From what I've seen, UEFI is disabled in the BIOS by default and there are disclaimers out there saying something like 'we strongly recommend NOT enabling this @#$^ unless you first disable these widgets first. Go Figure!

Hey Yo, isn't UEFI nothing more than a middle man ? Now this is a bargaining chip for the middle man. I thought UEFI was a go between from the OS and BIOS. A sort of UTILITY BIOS go between. Hmmm. Maybe not. But I think so! Hmmmmm. Can't decide. All directions are worthy of their time if they lead to the right direction.

UEFI is a requirement for a machine to get a Windows 8 Logo on it from an OEM. So while there aren't a lot of UEFI-based DIY boards out there (although they're starting to show up in increasing numbers in new chipsets) just yet, every OEM machine with a Windows 8 logo on it is UEFI out of the box.

And yes, UEFI is better than BIOS in both security and performance.
