Hello LGC, and welcome to Eight Forums,

Yes, you can replace the 32-bit Vista with a 64-bit Windows 8 upgrade.

If you like, you could also use the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant to purchase and download the £24.99 ($39.99) Windows 8 upgrade ISO file on your 64-bit W7, create a bootable DVD or USB with the ISO, then clean install the 64-bit Windows 8 upgrade on your 32-bit Vista computer. During installation, you would enter the W8 product key.

Hope this helps, :)
Shawn

You're welcome.

The Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant only verifies that the computer you run it on qualifies for the upgrade. It doesn't tie that computer to the Windows 8 upgrade since it's only a check. You can download and purchase from any computer your like, but since you want a 64-bit copy of Windows 8 upgrade, you will only be able to do so from a 64-bit Windows.

Yes, you will get a new Windows 8 product key when you purchase the Windows 8 upgrade. This would be the key you enter during installation. The key is good for either 32-bit or 64-bit Windows 8.

You will not be able to upgrade from 32-bit to 64-bit. Instead, you must do a clean install with the Windows 8 upgrade copy.

You must be sick of explaining this, but I'll ask one more time. I also have a 32-bit Vista and want to clean install 64-bit Windows 8 over it.

I have a valid W7 64-bit that qualifies for the £14.99 upgrade. Can I download this ISO from this laptop and install over the Vista drive - without losing the right to use the W7 OS - this is the important bit for me.

Also, in the future can I transfer the W8 OS to another harddrive when I build my new PC??

LOL, no problem.

Yes to both questions as long as you no longer use only one of the Vista or W7 key while you have the Windows 8 installed and activated. :)

No, I meant once I had my shiny new OS, I would like to transfer that to a new hard drive in the future when I finally get around to building a new PC. I have googled it though and it seems like I can.. I think..

Having finally started down the route of buying the upgrades, every site so far ends up running the Upgrade Assistant.

So I assume that I run upgrade assistant on the 32 bit systems, burn some bandwith downloading an unwanted 32 bit ISO, then use the product key with the 64 bit ISO from my 64 bit system.

Cheers

LGC

OK, I am about to run the upgrade assistant from my W7 64-bit PC. I have validated my £14.99 offer and have the code. There are 2 things that bug me.

1.) The post above seems to indicate that I have to run the upgrade assistant from my Vista 32-bit OS. Will that not only allow me to download a 32-bit W8 ISO? I do not want to do that.

2.) On the Windows Upgrade Assistant page, it states:

"The Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant just requires that you run it in either the XP SP3, Vista, or Windows 7 that you are upgrading from to confirm that you have a qualifying OS for the purchase of the upgrade copy of Windows 8. That's all. Afterwards, you can do a clean or upgrade install with the downloaded Windows 8 Upgrade ISO file.

This will not invalidate the OS you are upgrading from. It's just that you agree as per the EULA (see warning below) to not have the qualifying OS installed so long as you have the upgrade copy of Windows 8 installed. If you uninstall the upgrade copy of Windows 8, then you could install and activate the qualifying OS again if you like."

Now I want to get the 64-bit ISO from the W7 PC and this needs to continue to be useable, as it's my mum's laptop that I bought her. I then want to install the 64-bit W8 ISO over the Vista 32-bit system. Is this possible?

Velisario,

If all you need is the 64-bit Windows 8 ISO and already have a separate product key for your mother, then you could just use the tutorial below on your W7 64-bit PC to get it.
If you need to purchase a product key and download a Windows 8 ISO, then you could just use the tutorial below on your W7 64-bit PC to get it.
Afterwards, you could just do a clean install with the upgrade 64-bit Windows 8 on your mother's 32-bit Vista.
Hope this helps. :)

Thanks again for the fast response. I think I am confusing things though. This is the situation I have:

Mother's laptop = Windows & 64-bit

My PC = Vista 32-bit

I want to use the laptop to get the £14.99 offer (done); use the upgrade assistant (on the W7 laptop) to get the 64-bit ISO (about to do); install over my 32-bit PC and afterwards my mum can still use the Windows 7 OS on her laptop and my Vista OS has been wiped.

Hi,

Me again.

I have downloaded Windows 8, but the laptop bluescreened on me during the "Getting files ready" stage.. Good 1st impressions

I rebooted and launched the download Windows icon that had been placed on the desktop. The "getting files ready" started again, and this time completed, but the ISO I burned is only named "Windows". Everywhere else I look the file is called "Windowsx64-pro-EN" or something to that effect.. Should I re-download it, or just use that ISO? The file size is 2.63 GB.

My head is starting to hurt. I am trying to download the ISO using the guide below:

Windows 8 Upgrade ISO - Download or Create

But after I run the Windows8-Setup.exe file it immediately takes me to Step 7 to install by creating media again...

It seems all I need now is a 64-bit ISO. How do I get this??

Hi Theog,

I have downloaded the ISO from a 64-bit PC - as stated above the download was only 2.63 GB, which Brink states is the 32-bit ISO. I am also going to wipe the partition (whole drive) of the Vista x32 once I have the correct ISO.

I cannot get the 64-bit ISO for some infuriating reason, as stated in my previous post. This is why I always ask loads of questions, because it invariably goes wrong.

EDIT: There is a folder at: Appdata/Local/Microsoft/ called WebSetup that seems to have the upgrade assistant exe in it. Do you think I should delete that folder and try the ISO download again, or is the setup.exe looking at the ESD folder on the C drive every time it executes? Will I have to try and download the ISO from a different 64-bit PC now??

Velisario,

Was it a Windows 8 or Windows 8 Pro ISO that you downloaded?

Mine was a Pro and was about 2.8 GB.

If you downloaded a Pro, then delete the hidden C:\ESD\Windows folder, and try again to see if it's the same size.

Should be a Windows 8 Pro ISO. That's what the e-mail states I ordered, and have a product key for. In the ESD folder under Windows/efi/boot there is a bootx64efi file.. Does this mean it's a 64-bit download?

If it's safe to delete the ESD folder I'll try that.
