Windows 8 OEM installation nightmare

I just spent the last weekend trying to 'upgrade' my new HP Envy laptop to Windows 8 Pro using a store bought OEM disc. I bought a Seagate Momentus XT hybrid drive and tried to ghost the factory drive - no luck. I then tried a clean install to the Seagate using the Recovery Discs I prepared originally - discs appear to be corrupted. I also tried booting from OEM disc and it appears that I'm missing a media driver. I read about installing from USB stick - tried that and no luck as the install couldn't see the new drive...

I now have a new notebook with no OS. My last resort at this point is to turn on legacy support in the bios and try to load the OEM disc. So much for trying to speed my laptop up.

Any ideas on how to get this thing working would be greatly appreciated.

Update - I changed the BIOS settings to allow for legacy support and Win 8 appears to be loading. Is it possible to switch back to UEFI (turn off legacy support) once installed (or will drive fail to boot)?

You are very welcome. You referred to a purchased OEM disc. Is it a full install system builder disc--which would come with a product key?

I ordered HP recovery discs this afternoon. Hopefully restoring from these to the new drive will be possible using UEFI/GPT...

I would not fasten the Product sticker to your PC. With the OEM version of Windows 8 you have Personal Use rights which allow you to transfer the OEM version to another PC that you own. This is a big change from previous Windows that locked the Product Key to the first system.

Not sure upgrading from Win8 to Win8 Pro will work with the OEM. Is this what your were trying to do? Why not do a full clean install using the OEM? And, are you saying that missing the media driver prevented the install using the OEM? Couldn't you install and then find a driver later? EFUI/GPT should be fine with the OEM/clean install--unless the media driver is a real hanging point. See this tutorial.

Jim makes a good point above. Glad you have the HP recovery discs coming.

I was trying to do a clean install using the OEM disc. I tried to create a cloned disc from the factory drive to the new hybrid but with no luck. The media driver was the hiccup point. Then when I tried to use the usb boot, the new drive was not listed as available.

I tried to do a clean install on the new drive using the OEM disc. That is when I encountered the missing media driver. This driver issue wasn't a problem when I enabled legacy support. When I tried to do a clean install from a USB key, the hard disk was not listed as available. If I had hair, I'd be bald by now!

Recovery discs came and still would not complete the restore. I'm not sure what the issue is. Returning notebook and I'll likely pick up another.

I tried both UEFI and Legacy and still ran into problems. I have a replacement notebook now. I'd like to swap out the stock drive with the new Seagate. When I load TrueImage t clone the drives, the Seagate is not listed. It is currently formatted in GPT protective and I cannot do anything with it using Disk Management...

Check the hard drive with the manufacturer's diagnostic tools.
