Win 8 setup doesn't start.. help pls :)

Hey guys! I'm having a problem with windows 8 professional setup:

So I have win8 consumer preview installed on my laptop. A couple days ago its licence expired, so I got win8 professional to upgrade.

I made an install USB with the win7 USB utility and proceeded to boot from the stick. The setup then told me I should restart my pc and restart the installation from windows.

I did that, but win8 setup won't start. It just starts reading from the usb for a second, then stops. The setup from the .iso I downloaded does the same thing.

To make things more interesting, the first time I restarted my PC after trying to upgrade windows from USB at start-up, I ran win8 setup and it did start and started doing some things, on that small blue screen that pops up. I didn't pay attention to it until the blue setup screen disappeared and nothing else happened...

One more thing, I tried to install Microsoft windows server 2012 on my laptop a month ago and the same thing happened with the setup.

Did a few hours of research on the internet, tried to run it in compatibility mode.. hope somebody can help me upgrade it. Can't really afford to do a "clean" install now, and on top of that, my PC reboots every 2 hours because my licence is expired...

Thanks!

Hmm. Are you SURE its set to boot from the USB key? You may want to press F12 when it turns on and select the USB hard drive/device or at least go into the CMOS program (could be F2 or ENTER or F10) and under BOOT make sure the USB is selected as the first boot device.

You Can Try Burning it on a Rewritable DVD And run the setup from there. :)

In fact I think That installing a OS from a DVD Or CD Is better than Installing from A USB Drive... :D
Bets Of Luck:thumbsup:

MadHorseman:
The laptop is a Lenovo Thinkpad Edge 13:
  • Processor: AMD Athlon II Neo K345 Dual-Core Processor 1400 MHz
  • RAM: 4096MB DDR3
  • Video Card: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200 Series
  • OS: Win8 Consumer Preview 64bit
Pretty much the only thing it's got changed from a vanilla Thinkpad Edge 13 is 2GB Ram Added.

It runs Win8 Consumer Preview just fine, so system specs should not be the issue... right?

orlandotek:
I've made the correct boot settings in BIOS.

It does ask me what device I want to boot from, does start win8 setup from USB, goes through language settings, asks if I want to do an upgrade or clean install.

After I select Upgrade the setup prompts me to "remove my media device, restart my pc so it loads windows normally, and continue with the installation".. or something along those lines, lol :)

Did you run the upgrade advisor?

I know you had Windows 8 Preview on there before, but you never know. Something might have changed
in Windows 8 that is now an issue.

orlandotek - I did, I just wanted to add that right now. It said 8 of my things need reviewing:

  • Install an app to play DVDs
You may need to install an app to play DVDs in Windows 8.

  • Sidebar gadgets aren't supported in Windows 8
You won’t be able to use the sidebar gadgets that are installed on your PC in Windows 8.

  • Secure Boot isn't compatible with your PC
Your PC's firmware doesn't support Secure Boot so you won't be able to use it in Windows 8.

  • AMD Catalyst Install Manager
Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.
Reinstall it in Windows 8

  • ATI Catalyst Control Center
Reinstall it in Windows 8

  • MiKTeX 2.8
Reinstall it in Windows 8

  • ThinkVantage Access Connections
Lenovo
Go to the app website for help

But other than that, it asked me what I want to keep (only one option - "Nothing") and then if I wanna buy windows 8. That's all, it didn't say anything about any other problems.

Nothing? Was that the only option? Because it should have had 3 options IF it decided you COULD upgrade. The 3 options should have been -- Choose What You Want To Keep 1) Windows Settings, Personal Files, Apps 2) Just Personal Files 3) Nothing

If it ONLY had "Nothing", I suspect for SOME reason only 1 guy in some cubicle in Redmond knows, it decided it could
NOT upgrade your Windows 8 Preview. And since you're having this issue, it was probable correct.

orlandotek -
I don't rly know what the options should have been, but if I can't upgrade it, I'd expect a clear message, like:

"Windows 8 Consumer Preview cannot be upgraded to Windows 8 Pro. You can choose to install a new copy of Windows 8 Pro instead, but this is different from an upgrade, and does not keep your files, settings, and programs. You’ll need to reinstall any programs using the original installation discs or files. To save your files before installing Windows, back them up to an external location such as a CD, DVD, or external hard drive. To install a new copy of Windows 8 Pro, click the Back button in the upper left-hand corner, and select “Custom (advanced)”." :p

- it also doesn't make any sense to me that you could not upgrade from one version of win8 to another... right?

MadHorseman -
The setup from sources worked, but it gave me the message that's on top. I'm a student so I can get Microsoft products through the Microsoft academic program MSDN.

Now the question is.. can I extend my Consumer Preview period?? Kinda sucks since I've just started my exam session and I'd like to keep stuff simple right now, but it's annoying to restart every 2h :(.
