Hi guys
I have windows 8 installed from dvd and after a restart the pc won't boot anymore. It tells me:
Your pc needs to be repaired
The required boot configuration data file is missing some required information.
File boot\bcd
Error code 0xc0000034

So I tried to rebuilt the bcd, used the bootrec commands , tried auto repair, tried system recovery but nothing seems to help.

Anybody knows how to fix this?

OK, i have now tried every option i could think off:
repair, PC could not be repaired
Refresh, no luck either
Rebuilt MBR and BCD, no effect
recover, forget it, could not be recovered
checked registry and SAM files date stamps, all from before this happened (probably due to all attempts)
no idea what happened, seems like an update issue to me but how to check and maybe uninstall an update from the dosbox?

I see your system specs, but could you give us an overall description of how your system is set up, like are you dual booting, what is on both drives, like types of partitions? Are you doing a UEFI install, and where did you get the Windows 8 DVD?

Then just a good description of your install steps.

It read properly installed and running fine for some weeks already, used daily. So it is not the instalo r partition. Just simply after a regular shut down in the evening as always and the start up the next day this occurred.
I have put it on the c partition of the main drive, so nothing strange there. Other partitions contain data.

and it did the trick.
still don't know what made this happen but at least i'm back on the pc.

Hi guys.
I'm having the same problem as described above, but even the BCDBOOT command didn't help.
I'm also running Win 8 64 bit installed on an ~120 GB SSD drive-desktop PC.
This problem first occurred about 2 weeks ago, where I somehow got it starting again while trying different boot options/BIOS configurations. Worked fine again, until yesterday ... same startup blue screen. I tried different BIOS settings again but this time nothing worked! (and I probably tried every available option there is!)

Any sort of recovery doesn't work either as I get a promt that says my drive is locked!

I'd really appreciate some help, as I'd really hate to reinstall the hole thing. Espacially since I know that the data itself is working and a reinstall wouldn't be necessary if I could just boot the dam* thing! :(
Also, who says that this won't occur again even if I reinstall the OS!?

Make sure it is in AHCI mode.

If that doesn't work, you may need manufacturer firmware tools to fix it.

Ok I had the same problem. BCDboot c:/windows /s c: /l en-us did not work first shot but worked later after I found my Drive Locked.
On another thread I found
Bootrec /RebuildBcd
which appeared to be working. My own fault, a dodgy power board meant I lost power during windows rebuild on next boot and I was back to the original symptom and Bootrec /RebuildBcd gave me an error for c:\windows
After this BCDboot c:/windows /s c: /l en-us fixed the issue.

If you can't get into windows, you need to boot up winpe, go to command prompt and use those commands.

Better check your windows is on c first of all.

Is there any order I should put the command prompt? Tried as a single line and didn't resolve my problem. And yes window is on c:. Also trying to refresh windows but it says my drive is locked

Thx for the reply

It might not C from winpe - the drive letters are independently assigned, so you need to check.

They don't go on the same line.

Like this:

diskpart

<press enter >

lis vol

<press enter >

( that will show you the drive letters )

exi

<press enter>

It appears the problem is resolved, but just in case anyone else checks the thread, the command uses C:\ not C:/

But the way the command is written it puts the bcd store in the C:\ partition, which may or may not be the bootable partition. In most cases you do not need the /s since it will put the store in the System partition as default.

I created an account for the sole purpose of thanking you all. When I got this error, I almost cried. And I'm a grown man. You all helped me considerably.

I want to clarify for other people my exact steps because I was a little confused by all this (and stuff I read in other forums and such). Hopefully the next person can have an easier go at it.

1. On another comp running Windows 8.1 (It was Pro, while the problem comp was Home. I hoped it wouldn't matter and it didn't :) I created a USB recovery drive. To do this I clicked the search charm and typed "recovery". One of the options was "Create Recovery Disk" I followed the simple instructions. It said it only needed 512MB of memory so the 4GB usb drive was more than enough.

2. I stuck the USB into the problem comp and started the comp.

3. At the error message, it also said "Press Esc to access the something something" This brought me to what I believe was the BIOS. It looks like an old DOS Prompt PC from 1988.

4. In the submenu (tab if you will) of that screen there was a Boot option. On the Boot Tab was a list of boot options that began with 1) Windows, 2) USB Cruzer (which was the brand of USB I had so I knew it was that) and 3, 4 and so on.

5. On option 1 I clicked enter and went to the USB Cruzer option and clicked enter. This changed the order to 1) USB Cruzer and 2) Windows, etc.

6. I saved my changes and exited (I think the option was F10 to save)

7. I restarted and it went to the Windows Recovery!!! This was a milestone. I cheered alone in my apartment. No one heard, but it didn't matter to me.

8. I picked Advanced and went to Cmd Prompt as the instructions said.

9. Here is the part it took me forever to figure out. No offense to all the posters because you did help considerably, but it was really hard to decipher what EXACTLY to type in the command prompt. It was (remove the quotes) "bcdboot c:\windows /s c: /l en-us"

9.5 Note as a previous poster mentioned that the direction of the slashes /\/\/ is VERY important. And the spaces are important. That is a lower case L not an uppercase I before "en-us". Also a lot of the previous posts seemed in my mind to disassociate the "bcdboot" part from the "c:\windows" part and it was my sixth or seventh attempted when I typed them together. :)

10. A response in the cmd window said "Boot Fixed!" Actually it was a longer more specific sentence, but that's what it said in mind.

11. I exited the Cmd Window (clicked X, this whole time I assumed the mouse didn't work, like in the old DOS days before mice, so it was an embarrasingly long time before I used the mouse to close that window).

12. In the Windows Recovery I clicke the "Exit and Start Windows 8.1" option. It rebooted back to the Windows Recovery screen.

12.5 I realized I should have probably removed the USB key. I turned off the computer because I was unsure what would happen if I removed the USB while the comp was still on. Then removed the USB. Wait a few seconds as I've been taught in the past..... Turn on the comp.

13. Wait with extreme anxiety as the pc booted ... like ... normal :D, but it took a good long while. About one-two minutes longer than usual.

Success!!!!

Now to look into how much a 500GB cloud storage would cost so I don't break down in tears the next time something like this happens.

Again, thanks to all who helped in this forum. I'll be sure to come back for any future problems.

Thanks. I had repeat problems since posting here. However I now have a very stable system for over 6 months. Solution was to restore with the supplied Aldi recovery image supplied with laptop. All windows updates applied since recovery.
