I have used W8 since over 1 month with no problems. Suddenly I have lost ownership of c:. In my user account I am still Administrator. I can still use the computer but am very limited. When I try to open the taskmanager I get the error "Windows cannot access C:\windows\system32\taskmgr.exe".
In safe mode I look for permissions for local disk c: It says that "No groups or users have permission to access this object."
How can I regain ownership of c:?

Unfortunately that alternative is not present when I rightclick. And when I left-click I get the error "C:\ is not accessible. Access denied." If I rightclick and choose "Properties" I get the message "You must have read permissions to view the properties of this object". If I choose Advanced I get "Unable to display current owner".

DO NOT, i repeat, DO NOT take ownership of the c: drive as advised above.

Best thing to do, is try to create a new admin user and login to that and see what happens.

If that doesn't work, the best thing you can do, is back up your data and reload/reset Windows.

Reason...

Taking Ownership of the C Drive will cause you a ton of problems. It will break windows. Never do it.
Especially with the TakeOwnership Hack.

Besides not having access to C: drive, there are more tan likely a whole bunch of other stuff that is messed up as well.
The only way to correct this is to try a restore, reset or reinstall of Windows to correct all the permissions that have been broken.

I do not have the rights to create a new user- although I am Administrator. I tried to refresh but got an error It looks like something didn't load correctly...... Error code: 80070490
I found some references for this code for Vista and W7 but not W8. I think I have to give it up and reinstall.

I finally solved the problem. I have dual boot windows 7. In w7 the partition was also unaccessible, but I could change and add new users. Sop I added myself and all corresponding users from W7 c:-drive. After rebooting I was back in business. I do not understand what happended. May the dual-boot have created it?

Before I took ownership of C:\ , I made factory default backup on thumb drive.
I have a factory default backup drive on the computer.
I made a Restore Point.
I can download a copy of Win 8 Pro & re-install it using my present product code.

Since taking ownership of C:\, I have experienced no problems what-so-ever.
I did not "advise", I put the idea out for consideration.

It is not a "Hack".It is a legitimate option provided by Microsoft.
:geek:

This page "might" be of use.I'm just putting the idea out there for consideration. :)

Yes, it is a legitimate option, I am aware of that. I call it a hack cause it's not a mainstream thing and not everyone should use it.

Taking complete Ownership of the C drive WILL cause problems in the long run.
