Can I install Windows8upgrade without Windows7 installed?

Hi have had a search so sorry if this has been posted elsewhere.

I want to install Windows8upgrade (just downloading the ISO now).

I have my Windows7ultimate 64 and have two questions :

1) I want to do a fresh install of Windows8 on my SSD drive. Do I have to install Windows7ultimate first or can I just install WIndows8 from the ISO I am downloading from the windows8 setup using this guide? :
http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/13200-windows-8-upgrade-iso-redownload.html

2) If I don't have to installWindows7 prior to installing the Windows8upgrade will I lose any functions from the Windows7Ultimate edition to the Windows8 Upgrade? I have purchased Windows8Pro.

Thank you for your time and help.

You should be able to do a clean installation, but there are some people where it didn't work.

There would be also the option to get one of the following MSDN-ISO's:

- en_windows_8_x86_dvd_915417.iso
- en_windows_8_x64_dvd_915440.iso

I assume you are talking about installing 8 on a separate drive possibly on a separate computer and leaving 7 installed. That's not allowed by the 8 EULA if you are an upgrading; your 7 installation on the other drive/computer would have to be uninstalled. The installation also should not work without having an older version of Win installed on the same drive/partition. Do you have Vista or XP that you can install? Install on the SSD if possible, and then upgrade whichever you install.

No this is not what I mean.

One system - one OS hard drive.

All I am wanting to do is fresh install Windows8 and wondering if I can do this without the need to go through the whole fresh Windows7 install then installing the Windows8 update.

As quoted

This is what I want to do.

In other words :

PC + SSD drive with no date install Windows8 on it, Winodws7 is now redundant as the license has now transferred to the Windows8 install.

Hope that clears things up :)

From what you are saying is that I DO HAVE to install Windows7 and theninstall the Windows8 update?

Peace

No need to reinstall old Windows install.

Yes, you can do a clean install:
http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/13375-clean-install-windows-8-upgrade.html

You lose all functions & use of Windows 7.

So just to be absolutely clear.

I can install the Windows8 upgrade on my now formatted hard drive which formerly had the Windows7 upgrade which is now redundant and 'in the kitchens waste bin' so to speak.

It is worth noting that my official disk of Windows7Ultimate is a multi-install license direct from microsoft and not OEM. But that is not for this thread ;) The only reason I will reinstall windows7 totally removing Windows8 is if I should have severe existing software comptiblity problems ie software security dongles and so on.

Do I loose any functions in the Windows7Ultimate 64 compared to Windows8Pro. I will only This is just for reference and awareness.

Thanks again people :)

OP:

theog knows his stuff, but FWIW, below is what MS says about prior OS and installing with a disc. Should be the same with an install flash drive, an ISO, or an in-place install. Here's the link to the quote:

"Or if you prefer (and if it is available in your region), you can buy the upgrade as a DVD from a participating retail store. Note that if you're upgrading from a DVD, you must have Windows running on your PC when you begin the upgrade. If you'd like to reformat your hard drive, you can do so as long as you start your PC from media and then format your hard drive from within the setup experience for installing Windows, and not prior to it."

Clean install Windows 8 pro Upgrade....
To all of you who are uncertain of this, I can verify that you do not need any kind of Trick & Cheats to do this.
This i not a guess or just me blabbing empty words, I have done this several times already.

When I set up a PC I always delete all partitions including the recovery partition, I will never ever need this. Of course I always ask people and explain what this means before doing so on others machines.
But by deleting all that crap the manufacturer installs gives you an entire better feel and overview of your setup.

To get the upgrade you need a PC with an activated OS XP and up, go to this link and follow directions,-

windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/buy?ocid=GA8_O_MSCOM_Prog_FPP_Null_Null
During the procedure you get the option to save to an ISO file, do that and burn with your preferred program (ImgBurn)
You also get the option to buy an install DVD ($20) waste of money if you ask me.

If you need Windows Media Center it is available for free limited to January 31, 2013 --

Instructions on how to in the link.

-----------
Windows 8 Pro 64 bit DK Upgrade bought from Microsoft can be installed and activated without any kind of previous installation or use of licenskeys (Clean Install)

>>Boot from CD, and when you get to –“Which installation type do you want” Choose Custom: Install Windows only (advanced).
Choose now which partition you want to use or delete all partitions by clicking (Drive options (advanced) Highlight each (one at the time) partition and delete.
Now create a new partition for your OS, use either all available space (one partition) or split the space as you desire. The other partitions can be created after installation via Disk Management.
Final highlight the partition you created or chose and click next, installation begins.

I did it already 2 times myself. I own 2 Key's for $14.99 and 1 Key for $69.99, but there are still some user's where it didn't work, mainly Laptop-Users.

The Upgrade-Path with keeping all your appz and settings doesn't work most of the time.

When using the new Windows 7 PC offer ($14.99), you need to use the OEM manufacturer's Upgrade Adviser/Installer.

That's right. I had 2 Windows-7-Custom-Builds and have an old Dell-Box.

So the 2x $14.99 are via Upgrade-Advisor / Installer from within Windows-7-Ultimate-SP1-x64 and the one for $69.99 is for my Dell, as it's already 2 years old.

I also build myself via the en_windows_8_x64_dvd_915440.iso + XDELTA-Pack a Windows-8-Pro-WMC and integrated my activation / keys, that I don't have to download the WMC all the time and only have to re-enter the WMC-Key. That's nothing illegal, as I legally own the right keys to do so.

Clean install Windows 8 pro Upgrade....
To all of you who are uncertain of this, I can verify that you do not need any kind of Trick & Cheats to do this.
This i not a guess or just me blabbing empty words, I have done this several times already.
I don't think anyone here doubts you can do a clean install using, for example, an upgrade install disc without tricks or cheats. Is that your main point--that such an install can be done without tricks or cheats?

Yes, that's the point. The Quote was not my own post btw., I only quoted it to show, that it's not only working with my machines.

Ok so I have now performed a clean install of Windows8x64 on my existing harddrive but by deleting the previous windows7 install using diskpart/clean/format/active/etc.

Now I am up and running I have hit an issue when activating :

Invalid Product key:

The following failure occurred while trying to use the product key :

Code:
0xC004F061

Description:
The Software Licensing Service determined that this specified product key can only be used for upgrading, not clean installations.

Any help please I really dont want to reinstall W7 fresh, then W8 again.

Thanks

Sorry, that you are one of the unlucky ones, but you could do 2 things:

1.) Just install Windows-8 again over the already installed Windows-8 and activate it after

or

2.) Do the following:

Change this registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Setup/OOBE

Change "MediaBootInstall" from "1" to "0"

After doing that, typed "slmgr /rearm" (without the " ") into a command prompt (right-click, Run as Admin), wait for conformation prompt, restart your pc and activate Windows-8.

It could be that M$ already changed something within the Upgrade-ISO or the activation-process, as now more people seem to get this issue too.
