Shortcut icons are blue E's..no longer originals

Many of my shortcut icons are now Blue E's, instead of their original ones. This is a new computer with Windows 8 on it and when we moved over my desktop icons, many are not showing their old icon pictures. Any idea on how to get them back?

Note if you change the default browser to something other than IE, and you've pinned sites to your start screen, this is what happens. Not saying this is what is happening here, but this is the most obvious reason it can happen (and with these exact symptoms too).
