I acquired a new laptop for christmas, and the sytem came with the windows eight OS preinstalled. after a while i made the decision i would like to have a go using a GNU/linux system, so rather shortsightedly i removed the orginal system instead of creating an sda style HDD partition (in my defence, i was a little intoxicated when i made the installation). so, i was just wondering if it was possible to find the product key of the original copy of the windows 8 product key, as i don't really want to spend another £25 on something i don't need.

TL;DR, is there a way of getting the windows 8 product key after replacing it with linux?

Welcome to EightForums.

No need for a product key, when reinstalling a OEM manufacturer's PC.

We always assume you have made your Recovery Disks using the OEM manufacturer's Recovery Media Creator app the first day you had your new PC.
& made the Startup Repair CD.

If your computer is new it should have the key stored in its uEFI. All you need is an windows 8 installation disk. If you don’t have one you can find an iso here The Official Windows 8 Repository. When you reinstall the computer will automatically get the key from uEFI. I don't think many new windows computers are shipping with COA's stuck to the bottom.
