Solved All tiles are gone

Today, after installing the latest upgrades, I was given wellcome by a completely purple start screen (which is not even the color combination I choose) with no tiles: nothing, except the violet backgroung and the "start" logo in the corner.
All the tiles and the Metro apps are gone.
Using CTRL+ALT+CANC I'm able to get to the classic desktop, and I can even summon the charm bar, but when I try to run a metro app, even the Settings one, nothing happens.

I'm using an original copy of Windows 8 PRO 64 bit with all the available upgrades installed.

I really don't know what to do

You're welcome. I assume you ran it once? If so, please run it again. It did fix corrupted files. We'll see if it does more.

This is short of a refresh in which in that process one loses some programs. How far are you into installation so far as other loaded programs?

Now it says that it din't find any integrity violations. I really don't know if it is a good thing or a bad one.

Talking about the programs, I did have like 4 metro apps I downloaded plus some desktop programs like Photoshop and Lightroom.
I've been using that computer for 3 weeks, it would be a shame for me to lose all of my software and files.

No need to apologize. I understand completely. :)

OK, good on the Scannow. Do all the updates in your Windows Update list show as installed OK? We can assume that one of these updates corrupted a setting since the Scannow fixed corrupted files. Wouldn't you agree? If so, we need to find a common update that may be doing this to other users. Trouble is that when we do a search on the word "update" we get a lot of posts to read through. Let's do a search to see what we can find. Please let me know on the condition of the updates list. I'll be back....

Here's a list of all the updates I've downloaded since the OS installation.

The last updates are the ones dated 22 december.
I can try to remove all the recent ones, maybe it would help.

Obviously using system restore would be an option here.
System Restore - How to Do in Windows 8

No way, one of the first thing I do when I install Windows is to deactivate System Restore. It takes way too much space in my HD, even if sometimes it is helpful.
I'm blaming myself for this right now.

And I don't have an ISO of my system, sorry.

I stand corrected in that sfc /scannow is not new.

Excuse me, but to me a system restore is not an obvious option at this time. Would not one lose programs that have been installed after a created restore point be lost? Besides that, we don't know if the OP turned that feature on since it's off as default in 8.

I'm trying other methods first.

OK, Melampo. Uninstalling the updates may not always fix the problem that they may have created. Assuming it was an update that caused the problem. It may be a coincidence along with something else that may be the problem.

Ugh! What to do?!! I just got back to me PC and haven't performed a search as of yet. What would you think on a System Refresh? http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/2293-refresh-windows-8-a.html?ltr=R

One loses 3rd party programs, updates and other things that are listed in the tutorial, but it may save time in the long run? Chev65 is correct in that then you can go through installing each update individually to see if one is the culprit. It may be another program causing the problem.

You'll have to way out the time factor of performing Refresh and then reinstalling your other programs. If you go this route, I would suggest to just run the OS alone with updates until stable and then add other software.

Edit: Did your screen resolution change after the updates by any chance?

What is the difference between refreshing the OS and reinstalling it?
I'm a little worried: if I refresh Windows 8 and then install all the updates one by one to see which one was the cause of my problem I will surely get into the same situation I'm now, since I would install the curripted update anyway.
Am I wrong?
I really don't want to format or refresh my computer multiple times in order to have it fully working, I don't have the time to do that.

Btw, no, my screen resolution is the same as Always.

EDIT: I found a guy with the same problem: Solved: Start Screen completely Blank - Tech Support Guy Forums
It is the very same issue. His solution, as you know, didn't work for me.

Refresh would be better for you would not lose as much as the list states in the tutorial.

No, you're not wrong. You'd be in the same situation, but you'd know not to install that update. Problems with these updates have me stumped for I'm not that savvy.

If it be an update, it has to affect your particular machine I'm guessing, otherwise it would affect all. I've had no problems with updates whatsoever.

We know it's on the Modern (Metro) side and not the Win32/64 side for you still have a desktop. Correct?

Any yellow flags in Device Manager?

I have 3 computers in my house: all of the are running Windows 8 and all of them are up to date. They work perfectly.
This one is the only I'm having problems with, so I guess that the issue is surely related to this particular hardware configuration.

I do have a desktop, a fully functional one. The problem is only Modern/Metro GUI related.

No yellow flag in device manager: drivers are at their latest version (VGA, LAN, WIFI, Chipset, SATA...) and everything is fast and stable as always.

I did like 10 sfc /scannow so far: after the first one, which showed some currepted files, the other 9 ones were all ok. No errors.

It does pop out even when I'm in the Start Screen, but when I click on Computer Settings nothing happens. It does not run, as all of the metro apps.

Well then, we can say that the Modern side of the OS is dead. Very strange for sure! I'm sure you know that it runs like a VM. I don't quite grasp all that yet, but that's what I read.

I don't know what to tell you at this point other than a reinstall or a refresh, unless someone else comes along with some other solution. Chev65 may have been correct after all.

What are your thoughts?
