I upgraded my older, XP machine to Win 8 Pro. I did the on-line upgrade and all went well.
Turns out it was a 32 bit install, even though the PC was 64 bit capable. (I understand now this is due to upgrading from XP)
Yesterday I received my back up DVDs and decided to upgrade from the 32 bit version to the 64 bit version...
But nothing I've tried has worked.
Machine is an AMD Athlon 64 X2 w/Mach Speed MSNV-939 MB...I don't have anymore specs right now as I am at work.
1. Tried to upgrade from the 32 to 64 within windows 8 using the DVD. The installer said it couldn't do that.
2. Thought about reinstalling the XP OS, but figured I'd have the same issue being 32 bit.
3. Installed a copy of Vista 64 bit I had, (full copy, not upgrade). Went fine, so I confirmed 64 bit operation.
4. Tried to install Win 8 64 bit from DVD within Vista. All went well until the first reboot when it locked at the blue windows emblem.
5. Tried to boot from the Windows 8 DVD, immediately locked at the blue windows emblem.
6. Went back and reinstalled Vista 64, formatting the hard drive first. Then tried the Win 8 upgrade DVD. Again, installation seemed to work, but locked up on first reboot.
7. Last think I did was reinstall Vista 64 again and let it run through all 200+ updates thinking Win 8 needed something newer, maybe a driver...I don't know.
8. Went to bed.
9. My plan after work is to download the upgrade from Microsoft into Vista and try that.
Any thoughts...??
This is not my first rodeo and I am sure I must be missing something simple.
Thanks for any help,
Bob T.
