Basically i had the black screen issue upgrading to windows 8 from 7 on an HP Dv6. This was my fourth install of Windows 8 on laptops. one A6 toshiba one i5 and one i3 lenovo laptop. After install and setup it seems to have an issue getting to personalize screen. Based on the fact that the HP Dv6 and the A6 toshiba had almost identical software and the same brand graphics card/processor(issue only appeared on the HP Dv6). Well guess what there is a simple solution. Before you do this upgrade (if you have simply revert back to win7). I have tested this 3 times and it has worked.
While still running windows 7 download and install Advance System Care 6.
When it is installed make sure the system monitor works and DO NOT REMOVE IT as it is the only active app running on windows 8 black screen.
So after the install if you have the black screen you will notice that it is completely black BUT the system monitor is still running.
Click on the small arrow on the top corner of the monitor and simply click scan when the drop down appears.
Run everything but vulnerability fix registry fix disk scan and disk defragment.
Then click scan and repair.(wait for it to finish)
Then simply restart from the shutdown menu on iobit system monitor.
It will take awhile to restart and when it does you will get a black screen with text. It is iobit defragging your registry. After that it should bring up your new windows 8 working fine.
I am not a programmer or software developer but this has worked for me on the HP Dv6 laptop that had the black screen issue. If this helps you or you have questions let me know. I rarely write guides please share it if it helps.
