Is this the same tech used on DVD films?

Exactly, because the filming industry dose not want people redistributing the DVDs illegally, but for "home and personal" use it is acceptable by US law to make a backup of the DVD, if you own it,

EG: I go buy a DVD movie, and want to make sure that I will still be able to view it, if my original DVD get damaged., so I create a backup of the DVD.

Back to the issue of Windows on a flash disk; sense it is possible to incorporate some sort of write protection, then why not?

It would be nice to have a simplified thing like:

    Home / Professional / Ultimate

Knowing M$, they will probably add to instead of simplifying the various version releases. Time will tell, my friend.

Well shucks, why not make the RTM's on flash drives? I suspect all retail software will be supplied this way soon. Much is supplied by download then transferred to flash drives.

Agree, they are distributing it by download.

You can copy a DVD to your HDD or USB and install from there.

I don't think MS is too worried about it, they let you D/L and install for a trial period now.

If you had a locked, one use USB, how would you re-install?
Then what would you do with the USB?

They might make it like Windows Activation, have the USB only work on the same hardware.

Now you can use any DVD to install or re-install, you just need your key to Activate, in this senerio wouldn't a USB be the same?

I would not be suprised if MS goes away with discs for good before long. The more and more you start looking or configuring computers the drive section is going more towards an option.
