So I recently purchased a new laptop (hp dv7 7247cl) and it came w/win 8 pre-installed. Currently its on 1tb and I know for recovery it's equal or more. My ssd is 256gb. Which route is easiest for me?

A) I have recovery usb and will create repair disc (most likely needed) and work from there.
B) use older windows (I think I have an XP key somewhere, dont want to use my 7 key because I still use it on other laptop) and buy upgrade to win 8 pro.
C) clone - I really don't want to do this but last choice
D) if I buy win 8 pro would it know I already have 8 on my laptop because of product key in bios(?) (saw a post on the news forums) and I should be able to upgrade/install?

Thanks for any help in advance.

Thanks theog for the quick response. If I do D and it installs 8, could it still upgrade to Pro?

So I have backup and repair disk.
i bought win 8 pro, took out old hdd and swapped SSD. Disk runs fine but then I get "device driver not found" please install from usb or cd/dvd.

Was there a step or two missing? I tried to use recovery/repair but its says no drive/partition. Would it be safe to assume I'm supposed to do something with main HDD first before attempting clean install to SSD?

Thanks

Clean the HD Drive, using Step one in this tutorial:
SSD / HDD : Optimize for Windows Reinstallation - Windows 7 Forums
DO NOT USE CLEAN ALL ON A SSD.
Than type> convent gpt
& than Reboot PC to install.

So here's where I'm at. On my SSD, I was only able to install through legacy mode. HP's Bios/UEFI wouldn't let me go that route (at least none I can see). So I made the mistake of putting in my HDD (not formatted) and it overwrote my SSD. After a couple of hours of fiddling. I finally got this:

win 8 installed on SSD through legacy
Old primary as storage

I just need to read up on being an admin so I can delete windows.old.

I assume I'm ok going this route? (I really miss the old installation days)

Did you boot the DVD from the uEFI DVD Drive?

I don't think I got that screen. I went into my bios, and noticed for dvd boot up for UEFI was:

A) internal cd/dvd player
B) usb cd/dvd player

Followed the link after cleaning primary HDD

Fwiw, when you start up (HP) bottom left of the start screen you will see a message "Press Escape for boot options". It is there for a very short time! When you press escape, you will see theogs picture of choices.

Yeah I've done that, but I'll check again when I get home (at work atm). Btw, if that option is available, how would I go about cleaning my SSD (I know theog said not to Clean all on it) Samsung 840 250gb (not pro).

ok this is what i get when i press ESC:

f1 system information
f2 system diagnostics
f9 boot device options
f10 bios setup
f11 system recovery

when i press f9:
os boot manager
boot from efi file (if i choose this, i can get the EFI from win 8 disc, at language "shift f10>diskpart>list disk>no drives found)
notebook hard drive
internal cd/dvd rom drive

when i press f10:
UEFI boot order:
internal cd/dvd rom drive
os boot manager
usb diskete on key/usb hard disk
usb cd/dvd rom drive
! network adapter

I don't see anything similar to what theog showed. Currently win 8 works ok via install "legacy"

Ah. Sorry. Forgot the extra step. It is, of course the F9 option into theog's picture. But it seems that even in one brand, the options are different? F10 on both of mine take me into the Bios options.
