Why is my Win 8 install so big, almost 30GB

So I decided I am going to completely restart with a fresh install of Win 8 but the install ended up being nearly 30GB. That is without any programs installed yet, essentially a brand spanking new install.

My install was the upgrade option, over Win 7, and if I remember correctly, I chose to completely wipe out the old OS.

I did see a win.old folder, but have deleted it, or as much as Win 8 will let me. The properties of the win.old folder now says the size of the folder is 0 MB, however, the install is still around 30 GB.

What is the typical size of a 64bit Win 8 install supposed to be? Are there some hidden or left over files that can be deleted?

How much RAM do you have? You need to factor in the pagefile and hiberfile.sys size.

My Computer

System One

  • OS
    Windows Server 2012 Standard w/Hyper-V
    Computer type
    PC/Desktop
    System Manufacturer/Model
    HP ProBook 4430s
    CPU
    Intel Core i3-2310M
    Memory
    16GB DDR3
    Hard Drives
    80GB Intel 320 SSD
    500GB Samsung Momentus
So there's a possibility of a 4GB pagefile and 4-8GB hibernation file.
