Win 8 installation on new PC with XP

Hey there,

I've tried to find a solution to my problem, but haven't found anything that helps me with my specific situation.

I plan on building a new PC using 1 SSD, and 1 HDD. I have a Windows XP installation disc, and I'd like to use that so I can save some money and upgrade it to Windows 8.

I've seen how to clean install Windows 8 upgrade. I'm wondering how I should go about it. Do I install XP on the HDD, then upgrade and install Win 8 on the SSD -- is that possible? Or can I install Win XP on the SSD, then upgrade to 8 on there?

I'm confused, and would like to see if you guys have a solution.

Update: It looks like even though the XP installation will be 32-bit, I can clean install to 64-bit. If that's incorrect, please let me know.

Thanks.

Welcome to EightForums.

No need to reinstall old Windows install.

Clean the HD Drive, using Step one in this tutorial:
SSD / HDD : Optimize for Windows Reinstallation - Windows 7 Forums
& than Reboot PC to install.

Will your new PC have a uEFI BIOS?

But if I clean the HDD I won't be able to upgrade because Windows won't recognize a previous installation right?

I'm trying to put together steps.

1. Install XP - On HDD or SSD?
2. Run Upgrade Assistant
3. Boot from USB with Win 8 Upgrade
4. Erase previous XP installation
5. Install Win 8

The new PC will have clean drives though, why would I need to clean them? I'm only using the XP install so the Win 8 upgrade will recognize a previous Windows installation.

You can just do

convent gpt

if you like.

I'm only using the XP install so the Win 8 upgrade will recognize a previous Windows installation.

No need to reinstall old Windows install.
Also Win XP will not install on a uEFI BIOS.

So, I can "upgrade" to Windows 8 without having a previous install? I didn't know that was possible.

Still confused. The new PC will have no OS on it from the start. I thought I could install Windows XP onto it, then upgrade to 8. When you say "reinstall old windows install," I don't understand. I'm not reinstalling anything.
