Solved 64-bit System Builder Install Fail, Compaq Presario V6000

Greetings --

I am trying to upgrade a Compaq Presario V6000 laptop from 32-bit XP Pro SP3 to 64-bit Windows 8 Pro. This machine has an AMD Turion 64-bit CPU, ample RAM and HDD capacity. I am installing from the System Builder DVD.

Unfortunately the install is failing. After grinding away on the DVD for a very long time, finally I get the following message in a Windows 8-looking graphic:

"Recovery

"There was a problem with a device connected to your PC

"An unexpected I/O error has occurred.

"Error code: 0xc00000e9

"This problem can happen when a removable storage device is removed while it's in use or is failing. Properly connecting any removable storage and restarting your PC may fix this problem.

"Press Enter to try again

"Press F8 for Startup Settings"

There are no removable storage devices connected to the laptop. Neither of the 2 suggestions works, they just result in more grinding in the DVD drive and a return to the same error screen.

I just got through doing a successful install on a Presario V6700, which was also running 32-bit XP Pro SP3 previously. As far as I can tell the main difference between the two machines is that the good one has an Intel CPU and the problem one has an AMD Turion64 CPU. Both CPU's are 64-bit.

Letting XP complete boot-up and running the install DVD from Windows is not an option, since I'm trying to migrate from 32-bit to 64-bit and the OS won't allow it.

The BIOS allows booting from a USB floppy or USB HDD. Will it take a USB DVD? I don't think the internal DVD drive is bad but at this point I'm not sure of anything.

Thanks for the reply. This looks like a very good thing to do but unfortunately right now I can't even get to the "Language" screen referenced in the instructions for opening DISKPART at startup.

Further investigation at the HP site leads me to suspect that there may be some issue with the BIOS, and HP says they have not tested this model for compatibility with Windows 8. The release notes for the latest version of the BIOS reference an issue with Windows 7 that the new version fixes. From that I infer that the system is compatible with Windows 7. The DVD drive seems to work fine once the OS is booted up.

My inclination for the next step is to just buy a Windows 7 Pro 64-bit System Builder DVD and try it, in which case I will certainly do the cleaning you recommend. It's actually more important to me to have the same OS on both systems than it is to solve this problem with Windows 8, so if Windows 7 will work on it that's probably good enough.

HP are sponsoring an "Ask the Experts" day in their forums next week, I will try that too. But if they don't release a new BIOS that will work with the 8 install DVD that I have I'm not sure what else I can do. If you have any other suggestions I'm all ears.

I've been burned buying s/w on eBay, so I wanted to be sure I got the genuine article.

No that it's not possible.
Windows it's not recognizing your DVD palyer.
You can make a bootable USB key to be use for the installation. If you wont you can go through te downlodaing process and at the end make a Bootable USB key automaticaly. Make shure Your key is 4 gb or above.
Set the PC to boot from USB from the bios.

No that it's not possible.
Windows it's not recognizing your DVD palyer.
You can make a bootable USB key to be use for the installation. If you wont you can go through te downlodaing process and at the end make a Bootable USB key automaticaly. Make shure Your key is 4 gb or above.

You can use the DVD to install on another 64/32 bit computer (depending on what version you have) if you have another install key.

You can also delete Win8 from one computer you own and reinstall it on another computer - you might need to call Microsoft to reactivate.

But, yes, if it is installed on one system, it can't be installed on another (unless you have other install keys)

Thanks, Ray. That's what I was afraid of. It doesn't explain the original issue, I'd guess, but it does make the exercise moot unless I buy a second license.

I just wanted to update this thread for anyone who might be paying attention to it.

I bought a Windows 7 Pro 64-bit System Builder DVD from Amazon and installed it today, starting with a full CLEAN ALL using the DISKPART utility. No issues with the DVD drive as there were with the 8 DVD. I can't prove, but strongly suspect, that the BIOS in this machine somehow cannot support installation of Windows 8.
