No Option given to make Win8 Pro DVD

Greetings all,

I have been doing alot of research on this forum the last couple of months and it has come in very handy as i get used to Windows 8 - which i might add, it's beginning to 'grow' on me.

My first installation on my 2009 Compaq Presario Duo-Core rig went beautifully - no problems whatsoever.

So, i thought, what the heck, let's see what happens when i run the Upgrade Assistant on my 2005 Dell Latitude D510. Assistant didn't seem to give any impression that my system was incompatible with Win8, so i went ahead and bought another copy to install.

Problem is, it went through the download, then the verification of the download and gave me an 'access denied' error. I tried it again with the same result. Next i tried the link from the invoice that said if you need to download Windows 8, click here. So i did. Long story short, it downloaded, verified OK then left me two options: Install Now or Install Later from Desktop. Hmmm...where's the option to created the DVD??? This was last night, it was late so i left it to today to install. Everything went well and my laptop, which was running WinXP Pro is now running Win8.

But...i'm still left in the dark as to how to get the .iso file to create a disk should i ever need it again. I need you gent/ladies to help me find it either on my hard drive somewhere (not in download file) The installer did not ask me for my key and there was a Windows.old file which i tried to delete, most of which i was successful but there are still some files that remain (about 10 MB worth) that i couldn't erase. Seen Shawn's instructions on how to delete and will try it. I am assuming it contained my WinXP install.

But, i digress, where is the .iso file???

Thanks for reading and any responses are greatly appreciated...it has me stumped!

you don't have to, you can copy the C:\ESD\Windows folder to a DVD and make it bootable.

Thanks for the quick reply 'MrShowdown'.

OK, i did some digging to find out how to do so -

"Use a DVD burning program like Imgburn. Use "Write files/folders to disc" to burn directly or "Create image file from files/folders" to create an ISO image. As a next step add under "Source" the hidden folder C:\ESD\Windows.

To enable the DVD to boot, enter on the tab "Advanced/Bootable Disc" under "Boot Image" the file C:\ESD\Windows\boot\etfsboot.com. Under "Sectors To Load" enter 8 instead of the preset value 4. Now you can click on the "Build" icon - here Imgburn will ask whether you wouldn't prefer to burn just the content of the C:\ESD\Windows folder rather than the folder itself - yes, you want just the content of the folder."

Create bootable media for installing windows 8 after missing the - Microsoft Community

I guess i would follow the above steps using a program like Nero but first, i'll have to check to see if i have the file. If it is hidden, i'll have to go into folders and check "show hidden folders".

'theog', on the first link you gave, where it says "Install Windows Now", the option to "install by creating media" was not present. The one i chose and later used was the "install later from desktop"

I'm going to try and find the ESD folder and create an image from there.

I'll let everyone know how it goes...here's hopin'!

That's absolutly normal thing.
Downloading from Windows XP not allow you to make a Bootable media. Tecnical matter.
The work aroundi are as follow and absolutely legal.
Re-download Windows 8 with your Key from a PC runing Vista SP1 or 7 (take care of the 32/64bit story) there you will have the way ro burn your DVD. then go to your PC and do the job.
Download Windows 8 from your PC and let it be installed. Don't worry about DVD or Key now. Just let 8 to be automaticaly installed. Once 8 its' runing, simply repeat the download procedure and at the end create your media.

If you have the ESD directory still on the drive - there is no need to download it all again.

( it is hidden - so you need to go to folder options and show hidden files , if you want to see it )

You can use this to make an .iso from it:

I did get it to install via the option to "install from the desktop" I'm going to check for the ESD file and see if i can burn from there. I recall seeing a c:\ESD file but it was empty, more than likely due to the failed verification process.

Grazie Renato!
