Solved Upgrade Key and Full Install Disc

On Windows 7, I could use a full install disc, skip entering a key, and then pop in an upgrade key to activate. I know with Windows 8, that you can't skip the key during the install routine, so here's my question:

I have several licenses for Windows 8 from TechNet and Retail purchases. Could I use a full install disc of Windows 8, put enter my upgrade key during the install process? I remember in past versions and other software, you'd be prompted for a key or disc of a previous version.

If that isn't an option, and I go with plan B, following the clean install (using upgrade) tutorial here, how "clean" does it leave the system? I'd have no files on the computer at all worth saving, I just don't want duplicate OS files....hence the reason I'm interested in the clean install above.

If it matters, this would be done on my Ultrabook, which is an HP Envy 4t-1000.

You might want to consider a program such as Active KillDisk. There also is a for-money version.

Hello Deacon,

For an upgrade license (key number), the method in the tutorial is the only way I know of to legally activate it with a clean install. :(

I was afraid that was going to be the answer. I guess the refresh option works well enough in your tutorial, especially since no files or software would have been installed before the refresh process anyway. I'll give that a shot. The end result is probably going to be far better off than loading Windows 7 and then upgrading to 8. Thanks!

OK, but you said: "I just don't want duplicate OS files....hence the reason I'm interested in the clean install above." I don't think clean install necessarily will accomplish what you mention in ensuring there are no duplicate OS files. You might still have duplicate OS files even though they are not specifically identifiable via the OS if you clean install. I guess I read you too literally.

That still had nothing to with wiping a disk clean so data can't be recovered. Something like Active Killdisk is used when a person wants to wipe a drive clean they are selling on eBay, or something of that nature.

My concern was, in the past, when you'd do a second install...the upgrade of an upgrade...Windows kept files from the first install, as well as the second. I'm already starting with a blank drive...but I don't want a duplicate install of Windows 8...or files left from the first install...then other files by the refreshed install. I wasn't finding documentation on what is happening when you choose the refresh option.

Someone mentioned in another thread (can't find it at the moment) that if you add the correct ei.cfg file you can install without having to enter a product key. It would normally be in the sources folder.

If you enter a valid key it should activate. If you enter a black listed key Windows will accept it but fail activation. If you use the key Microsoft gave you it should activate OK. This ei.cfg is supposed to work with Win 8 Pro.

The way I read it a generic default Product code will be used that will not activate so you're not cheating activation. You'll end up in a trial mode like you would if you didn't enter a product code during a Windows 7 install.

How to install Windows 8 without product key

I tried the ei.cfg method and when I went to activate with my technet acquired serial, I received an error saying that activation was not possible.

So yes you can install without a key, but it seems that activation isn’t possible if you do it this way.

As an update, I finally got around to trying my upgrade key on a clean install using a full (non-upgrade) disc. My key was accepted, and the install completed, however, I say the same Product ID not available screen under Computer Properties. So, as far as I can tell, it isn't any different, whether you use an upgrade disc or full disc with an upgrade key...you still need to follow the steps in Brink's tutorial to activate it.
