Hi
For the first time I have purchased an upgrade instead of the full version. It installed ok, but I am having one or two issues. For some reason, although in power options I have it set to 'shut down' on the power off, it shuts down then sometimes within a few minutes or in a few hours (during the night usually) my pc turns itself back on! When it turns on it says 'resume from hibernation'. But no where in the power options have I got it set to hibernate! The other issue is that occasionally I get a BSOD. Im guessing this might be something to do with my Brother MFC-5895 printer which uses windows generic drivers as Brother have not developed their own yet. But Im not sure.

What I wanted to ask is....can I re-format my hard drive using the windows 8 upgrade disk or do I have to use my windows 7 disk and then upgrade to W8? I thought maybe if I do a clean install, it may improve things.

IME:

If the install procedure finds an old copy of Windows, Windows8 will be activated when the install completes.

If the disk is blank then one way to activate is to follow the instructions in this link:

http://www.eightforums.com/installa...have-anything-previously-hd-6.html#post131604

That's only if you are purchasing and installing the upgrade copy of Windows 8 using the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant.

Once you have already done that to purchase the upgrade copy of Windows 8, you can use what I posted above instead to simply just do a normal clean install without having to use any sort of tricks. :)

I booted and used the same DVD for both installs. In the 2nd case where the disk was formatted but blank, Windows was not activated. I therefore followed the above procedure. There may be some other reason why activation did not take place, the laptop was connected to the Internet as I had entered my wifi security details duing the install.

Did you have the option to enter your product key number during installation?

I created both a DVD and USB from the downloaded Windows 8 upgrade ISO, and also used the ISO in a VM, and was able to do a clean install using all 3 on a blank "unallocated" HDD with it being activated afterwards. Of course all 3 required me to enter my key number, and I had it uninstalled from any computer/HDD first though.

I entered the product keys as shown in step 4 of your procedure. I did not have to re enter the product key when I did the refresh on the laptop. It just activated with the original key that I used.

Thank you all for your comments, very much appreciated and interesting. I bought the upgrade dvd, I didn't download it from the windows upgrade assistant, so hopefully it should go smoothly (famous last words where I'm concerned lol)! I will see how things go over the next few days but will re-format/re-install at some point soon.
