How much space does Windows 8 need?

I have a 32gb mSATA SSD drive along with a 750gb regular HDD. I want to install Windows 8 on the 32gb mSATA SSD (C:/) and the rest of my files and programs on the regular HDD (D:/)

I wanted to know if 32gb is enough for Windows 8 taking into account things like drivers, updates, hibernation OFF, etc.

Thank you.

Right now Windows 8 + various things I have added takes 26.8GB. I have it on a 33GB partition, and I have deleted Windows.old.

I had Windows 7 on a similar size partition and I was starting to run into space problems.

If you install Windows 8 over (keep nothing) say win 7, a c:\windows.old directory is created, and this does take some space.
You might need to delete any previous version of Windows before you start the installation.

If you get rid of the hiberfile (command is powercfg -h off ) and reduce the pagefile to 2GB, then it should take less than 20GB.

Thanks. I'm definitely doing a clean install getting rid of any previous Windows installations. I guess the 32gb should be perfectly fine just for Windows 8 OS.

Also, does anyone know the registry settings for changing the installation path/folders of programs since I will be installing them on my other HDD? Like in C:/, Windows has both a x64 folder for Program Files as well as x86. I wasn't sure if I need to create these two folders as well since I'm separating the OS on my mSATA and all the other programs/files on my other HDD.

Best is to direct the program installation to the folder you wish at the time when you install the program. But if you want to muck around with the registry, go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion

On the right side, find the string called ProgramFilesDir and ProgramFilesDirx86 which you can set to your path(s).
