All I could find on the subject was this thread, which doesn't entirely help me...

http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/2344-dual-boot-installation-windows-8-windows-7-vista.html

The above thread is for dual booting 7/8 when Vista/7 are already installed. My laptop has 8 on it, and that's it.

I'm trying to install 7 on a second partition (lack of software support on 8 this early and all that,) and am running across errors. I used Partition Wizard to shrink my primary partition, I gave it 100GB free. When I try to load Windows 7 onto it, I get:

"Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition. See the setup log files for more information."

The Win 7 setup does see my 100GB partition in there, anyone know what's going on?

Where are the logs located? And I've used EasyBCD in the past, what would I do inside of EasyBCD to fix this?

OK, that worked, thanks! I have Win 7 loaded on the 100GB partition now.

But...

Now I don't get a boot menu, it just goes to Win 7 every time.

Thoughts?

1) Make sure your Windows 8 HD Drive is set to first boot. ( not in your case)

2) Install EasyBCD, http://neosmart.net/EasyBCD/]EasyBCD

3) Add your second OS.

4) Test both OS's are booting OK.

NOTE: EasyBCD will use the Windows 7 Boot Loader.

After you have made the dual boot with EasyECD, If you would like to use the Windows 8 Boot Loader, do a

After doing a refresh, you will be using the Windows 8 Boot Loader.

Can you tell me how to convert Logical drive to a Primary Partition using Windows Disk management utility.

I did it through Partition Wizard, not the Windows utility, sorry. It's a free download from Best Free Partition Manager Freeware and free partition magic for Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Vista and Windows XP 32 bit & 64 bit. MiniTool Free Partition Manager Software Home Edition. if you want to use it.

I just tried the refresh, and got "The drive where Windows is installed is locked. Unlock the drive and try again."

Was this before using EasyBCD?

No, just now. With EasyBCD, I added the Windows 8 line into it, and then chose to "Install the Windows Vista/7 bootloader into the MBR." This gave me the option to choose win 7 or 8. When I go into 8, it gives me a screen that it needs a repair. I then tried the refresh, and got that drive locked message.

Should I just do a repair? There isn't that much on the 8 partition I really need, so if it wipes my data, that's OK...

You only need to add the OS, & save.

May be easier to do a clean install now. If do make a System Reserved.

This partition in Windows 7/8, has three main functions.
1) it holds the Boot Manager code
2)the Boot Configuration Database.
3) holds the Repair tools.
