Solved Upgrade Install Consistently Fails at 29%

Hi,
I'm trying to upgrade from Windows 7 Home Premium to Windows 8 Pro via the Keep-Everything upgrade option.
Every attempt has the install failing after hitting 29% completion.

I've re-downloaded 3 times, have uninstalled everything that the upgrader suggested was incompatible (including security software), have tried installing from a USB, and closing all non-windows processes. I never downloaded any W8 Previews.
I know the 'quick-fix' is to pick the Keep-Nothing option, though I'd like to avoid that as much as possible since it will mean having to re-install a couple of month's worth of bandwidth.

Any help would be greatly appreciated :D

Hi, welcome to the forums, uninstall any security/anti virus program installed in addition to any third party utilities, after successful completion of installation you can install them back.

You could try going into your BIOS and reverting everything back to defaults, then try again. Another suggestion would be to download the ISO and check the MD5 Sum.

Thanks, I already did do this with no luck (as in the topic post).

@above: I'll try the BIOS thing in a sec. I tried creating the ISO and have the MD5, but I don't have anything to compare it to. Both ISOs I made (before and after a re-download) have different MD5s.

Edit: Hang on, you say download the ISO? Where can I find that?

https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/su...Languages=en&PageSize=10&PageIndex=0&FileId=0 will provide you with the SHA1 Sum for each ISO. If you don't have a Microsoft subscription, I believe you can get the ISO from the windows upgrade assistant. (I have not done this personally), however have you tried just using the Windows Upgrade Assistant from directly from your PC? Thanks, Hope this helps.

Hmm... Are you sure those ISO hashes will match ones compiled by the Upgrade Assistant? Neither of the ISOs I have match the hashes on that page.

And yes, of course I've tried using the Upgrade Assistant from my desktop.

Edit: Also, pretty much every time the Assistant checks for updates, it finds some (even only a few minutes apart). Are updates really that frequent or is something not running straight?

Edit 2: BIOS thing didn't work.

Note that Windows setup error logs are not those - they're actually the logs you find in %windir%\panther. They're usually a lot bigger, too, but those are the ones we'd need for a failed setup. The ones above aren't useful for debugging setup errors once you're actually into the Windows setup routine.

You could check on your MotherBoard manufacturer's web site for a BIOS update.

I always keep my BIOS up-to-date, despite the risk. It'll be sorry one day...

Anyway, I'm going to go ahead and marked this solved.
Zavation told me to set my BIOS to default - after which I set to 'Fail-Safe Defaults' - which didn't work.
Then I restarted, noticed the 'Optimized Defaults' option and did that.
Then I checked my Services to see if anything fishy was going on. I decided to enable Shadow Copy Services... God knows why it was off.
Bam, got past 29%.

So, it was the BIOS, enabling SC, or both. Thanks for your help.
